Aryna Sabalenka’s coach, Jason Stacy, has opened up about the secret behind the World No.1’s evolution on the court. The Belarusian has dominated the women’s circuit this season and has often shown composure and brilliance in tough matches. Her resilience also made her win her only Grand Slam of the season in New York.

Stacy joined Sabalenka’s team in 2018 and has transformed her game on the court, both mentally and psychologically. She won her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 Australian Open after beating Elena Rybakina. It was nearly five years after Stacy joined her team. Sabalenka became World No.1 later that year, but didn’t stay long in the position.

Iga Swiatek, who is one of her biggest rivals, overtook her in weeks and claimed back the No.1 position. The 27-year-old continued her progress on the court, defending the Australian Open in 2024 and winning her third Grand Slam at the US Open. That helped her regain the No.1 position, and she has been at the top for over a year.

The 2025 season, began with Sabalenka failing to defend the Australian Open title after losing to Madison Keys in the final. She then went on to lose in her second consecutive major tournament final after losing to Coco Gauff in three sets. But she finally got her only major silverware this season at the US Open.

During an interview with Tennis Channel, Stacy was asked about how Sabalenka confronted her challenges after losing back-to-back Grand Slam finals. He revealed that amidst her losses, she kept on believing, working hard behind the scenes, which helped her gain control over her emotions:

Even when she was double-faulting and breaking all the wrong records, Aryna kept showing up. She had humility and frustration, yet she never stopped. That’s the difference between a fighter and a warrior — and 2022 was when she started making that transition. Once she understood the technical side, she gained control over her emotions. She went from a young emotional fighter to a more mature warrior — with purpose, intention, and clarity.

The Wimbledon Championship was the only Grand Slam that Sabalenka failed to reach the final. She crashed out in the semi-finals after losing to Amanda Anisimova in three sets. The World No.1 got her revenge at the US Open months later, beating the American star in straight sets to claim the title.

Jason Stacy reveals the role he will play to help Aryna Sabalenka win her first WTA Finals title

Aryna Sabalenka has yet to win the WTA Finals in her career. She did well to reach the semi-finals in 2023 and 2024, but couldn’t find a way to claim the title. This year, she will be hoping to win the title. However, defending champion Coco Gauff and 2023 champion Iga Swiatek will also be looking for a way to win the title.

During the aforementioned interview, Jason Stacy was asked what his role would be in helping her win the WTA Finals. He explained that he wants to keep her grounded in her game amid the noise and hopes to make sure that she’s not satisfied with her current achievements on tour:

Tennis can consume you — the travel, the points, the rankings. We work hard on balance. We talk about life goals, values, family, purpose — things that remind her that she’s a person before an athlete. hen your self-worth depends only on winning, you’re never satisfied. But when you know who you are outside the court, you can handle anything inside it.

Sabalenka didn’t compete at the China Open during the Asian swing due to a minor injury that she sustained during the US Open. She was expected to defend the Wuhan Open crown but failed to do so as she crashed out in the semi-finals after losing to Jessica Pegula in three sets.
