Most of the top seeds from the top half of the draw have safely navigated through their second-round matches, with the third round set to get underway on day five at ATP Cincinnati. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, including Gabriel Diallo vs Jannik Sinner. But who will reach the round of 32?
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Joao Fonseca caught a lucky break in the second round as he was down a set and double break when Alejandro Davidovich Fokina hit a physical wall and didn’t win a game before retiring towards the end of the second set. Fonseca’s weakness was exposed in this match, and he must improve going forward to make a deep run. Terence Atmane got a fantastic win against Flavio Cobolli in a tight match that ended in a deciding set tiebreak. The Frenchman displayed great mentality after losing the second set. Atmane’s serve is a weapon, and Fonseca’s poor return can cost him this match. Both players are looking to make the round of 16 for the first time at the Masters level, but Atmane should have the edge.
Head-to-Head: Tsitsipas 3-0 Bonzi
Former Cincinnati Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Fabian Marozsan in the second round to end his five-match losing streak. The Greek needed the win desperately, and he played a solid match to do so. His backhand, which is his weakness, looked good, and he looked great on serve throughout the match. Benjamin Bonzi is in the third round of a Masters for the second time in his career as he upset eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti in a fantastic match. Both players played at a high level, but Bonzi’s ability to save break points proved to be the difference. The Frenchman has never won against Tsitsipas, but he will like his chances on a hard court. Expect a close encounter with Tsitsipas edging it.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 3
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Holger Rune is defending a lot of points here, and he is off to a positive start by defeating Roman Safiullin in two tight sets. He can improve on his forehand, which leaked some errors and didn’t look as effective as it could be. Alex Micheksen came through a tough match against Corentin Moutet and continues his good form. These two are facing off for the first time, and this can be one of the matches of the round. Michelsen is the more consistent player, but Rune can hit through his opponents much easily. The Dane should have the edge.
Head-to-Head: Fritz 6-2 Sonego
It was a classic Taylor Fritz performance in the second round to defeat Emilio Nava in straight sets. He dominated behind his serve but did enough on return to break Nava once in each set. He has a clear edge against Lorenzo Sonego, who has never won against the American outside clay and has a disadvantage in every category on a hard court. Sonego’s serve can keep this close, but Fritz is the more clutch player, and he should be able to win the tiebreaks if necessary.
Prediction: Fritz in 2
