Seven first-round matches are scheduled on Day 2 of the ATP Bitpanda Hamburg Open, including the matches of some top players. This article features #3 seed and former champion Andrey Rublev, who will take on Damir Dzumhur. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate. But which players will advance?
Head-to-Head: first meeting
This is a fascinating battle between two German wild cards who are at completely different points in their career. 35-year-old veteran Jan-Lennard Struff will take on Justin Engel, who is less than half his age. Both players have had a terrible season so far. Engel hasn’t won a main draw match in 2025, while Struff has won just two out of his last 10. This is Struff’s tenth main draw appearance in Hamburg, which gives him the advantage, but he must play at a good level to avoid another defeat.
Prediction: Struff in 3
Head-to-Head: Bautista Agut 2-0 Giron
Marcos Giron is quietly having a good season in terms of consistency. Despite not reaching the last four of any tournament, Giron’s win percentage of 60 so far is his career best. He had a good run in Rome, beating his compatriot Taylor Fritz and then taking a set off Hubert Hurkacz. Roberto Bautista Agut is searching for form and playing in Hamburg for the first time since 2020. I don’t expect much from the Spaniard this week, but he might have one good performance under his belt. It should be a physical match, and Giron tends to fold quicker when the rallies get extended.
Prediction: Bautista Agut in 3
Head-to-Head: Rublev 5-0 Dzumhur
Andrey Rublev desperately needs some match wins, and this could be a huge week for him. He has won just two matches in his last two visits to the Hamburg Open, but overall, this has been a pleasant tournament for the Russian. The 2020 champion has never lost to his first-round opponent, Damir Dzumhur, but this could be a lot closer than it looks on paper. Dzumhur has had a better win percentage this year than Rublev and is playing some solid tennis on clay. If Rublev isn’t firing on all cylinders, Dzumhur’s resilience will trouble him.
Prediction: Rublev in 3
