Friday at the ATP 500 event in Vienna will feature all four quarterfinal matches, with several top players in action–including the #2 and #3 players in the world, both also former champions at this event, in Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev. It should be a fantastic day of tennis in the Austrian capital, with both high quality play and close matches going down to the wire.
Head-to-head: Berrettini 3-2 De Minaur
Berrettini had a promising start to the season, including a nice run in Miami where he beat de Minaur, but has greatly fizzled out since mostly due to injury issues. He’s now trying to finish the season strongly in conditions that favor him (on paper) and he has got a couple of very good wins already in Vienna. A quarterfinal matchup against de Minaur is tough but far from insurmountable, as the Aussie tends to go consistently deep in tournament but falter to opponents with bigger weapons (as is Berrettini’s case). That said, while Berrettini has a chance if he can deliver a strong performance, consistency alone makes de Minaur the favorite here.
Prediction: De Minaur in 3
Head-to-head: Zverev 8-2 Griekspoor
This will be the eighth time these two face each other since the beginning of 2024, surprisingly often given their respective rankings. While Zverev predictably dominates the head-to-head, most matches are extremely close, with Griekspoor even often coming very close to winning before faltering with the finish line in sight–for instance, from a double break up in the fifth set at Roland Garros and serving for the match in Munich. Griekspoor has the game to trouble and beat a Zverev who is far from his best level and confidence, but it remains to be seen whether he has the mentality to do it here.
Prediction: Zverev in 3
Head-to-head: Musetti 1-0 Moutet
Moutet got his revenge on Daniil Medvedev for the final lost last week in Almaty, but his job isn’t getting any easier with an hungry Musetti in need of every single point he can get to secure an ATP Finals spot. That said, if there is a surface where Moutet has a good chance in this matchup, it’s on a indoor hard court. It will certainly be a far closer match than their Buenos Aires encounter on clay earlier this year and it should be decided by a few key points.
Prediction: Musetti in 3
Head-to-head: Sinner 5-2 Bublik
Bublik has scored two wins in this matchup, but they have both occured on grass. While a quick hard court is also a good surface for Bublik, it’s also a surface where Sinner has been almost invincible in recent years, it would certainly take something extraordinary from Bublik to get a second win over the World #2 in 2025.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
