Jack Draper has been picked to upset the applecart and defeat Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s Wimbledon. The British number one has been backed by former tennis star Andrew Castle to take down the Spaniard at Wimbledon next month.
Alcaraz is one of the most in-form tennis players around after just defeating Jannik Sinner in a final that went the distance at the French Open on Sunday evening. After battling back from two sets down, Alcaraz pulled off a 6-4, 7(7)-6(4), 4-6, 6(3)-7(7), 6(2)-7(10) victory against the world number one, Jannik Sinner, in the Roland Garros final. Looking ahead to Wimbledon, the Spaniard will be hoping to make it three titles in a row at SW19 as he looks to defend his crown once again.
Jack Draper, on the other hand, suffered a frustrating loss to Alexander Bublik in the fourth round at Roland Garros, where many expected him to go further and challenge for the title. However, this did mean that Draper picked up another place in the rankings and moved up to world number four on the ATP rankings, a new career high. At just 23 years old, Draper has been in fine form this season after winning at Indian Wells and making the Madrid Open final.
Furthermore, this will surely not be enough to fuel the fire in the British number one as Draper looks to improve on the disappointing second-round exits he has suffered in both 2022 and 2024 at Wimbledon. Andrew Castle has shown his belief in Jack Draper after speaking about what players must do to challenge going into the grass swing, claiming Draper can not only secure a personal best finish but maybe also go all the way:
"He won Indian Wells this year. He, like everyone else, is looking at this (French Open) final and thinking, 'what time is my practice court today? I've got to start improving right now'".
“He’s had a great year. Jack can win Wimbledon this year. You can’t possibly get to four in the world and not consider yourself, in front of home fans, a possibility".
“Don’t forget he beat Alcaraz at Queen’s last year. Of course, Carlos had been in Ibiza for four days partying like a wild animal, but so what? He’s beaten him and he’s capable of winning Wimbledon, for sure".
Both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to once again prove their class at Wimbledon this year, following a mouth-watering clash in the French Open final on Sunday. No doubt these two will be the centre of attention as the world of tennis descends on South-West London in just under a month’s time.
Draper will undoubtedbly be in prime position to punish any mistakes made as he looks to cause shockwaves through the tennis world and claim his first Grand Slam victory. Playing at his home Grand Slam this could provide the perfect ammunition the budding star needs to prove his place at tennis' top table.
