Carlos Alcaraz and Stan Wawrinka could be in line for their first-ever meeting, with a potential second-round clash at the Monte-Carlo Masters on the horizon.

Wawrinka has openly called it a ‘dream’ to play Alcaraz before he retires, which is expected to happen after the 2026 season.

But before he can get that chance, Wawrinka will need to come through his opening match against Sebastian Baez.

The two have already spent some time together on court during practice in Monte-Carlo and even exchanged a few messages on social media ahead of what could be an anticipated encounter.

Alcaraz and Wawrinka exchange messages ahead of potential matchup

Wawrinka posted a photo with Alcaraz on Instagram following their hit at the Monte-Carlo Masters, captioning it: “Carlitooooosss gracias.”

Alcaraz replied with a message of his own, responding with: “STAN THE MAN” in what could be a nod to an upcoming second-round clash between them.

This year’s tournament is Wawrinka’s last Monte-Carlo appearance before he retires, having received a wild card into the draw.

The Swiss veteran knows what it takes to win there, too, having lifted the trophy back in 2014 after beating Roger Federer in the final.

Sebastian Baez stands in the way of Stan Wawrinka’s dream match

Standing between Wawrinka and a second-round meeting with Alcaraz is Sebastian Baez, who he’ll face in the opening round in Monte Carlo.

The Argentine has shown his quality on clay courts and has been improving on other surfaces as well.

Baez reached just his second hardcourt final at the ASB Classic earlier this year, and he was impressive at the United Cup.

The Argentine even defeated Wawrinka at the United Cup, taking out the multi-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets.

There’s every chance he could repeat that result here, so Wawrinka will need to be sharp if he wants to book that clash with Alcaraz.
