Former World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz spent little time in the heat on Tuesday afternoon at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, defeating Hamad Medjedovic to secure passage to the round of 16.
The second seed spent just over an a hour and a half disposing of his Serbian opponent in clinical fashion. By virtue of this victory, Alcaraz recorded his 50th match win of the 2025 season, which leads all players on the ATP Tour.
Both men were evenly matched during the first set, until Medjedovic hit a crucial double fault at 3-3 to hand his Spanish opponent the break. This was enough for Alcaraz, who capitalized on his opportunity to take the first set.
After receiving a medical timeout at the end of the first set, Medjedovic made a valiant attempt to match his opponent's pace and power. Despite overcoming a break of serve, the Serbian was unable to maintain his consistency, handing Alcaraz another break. The Roland Garros champion did not look back, closing out the match to record his 13th consecutive ATP Masters 1000 win.
With consecutive Masters titles at Monte-Carlo and Rome, Alcaraz hopes to keep his streak going in Cincinnati. Up next for the five-time Grand Slam champion is Italian Luca Nardi, who defeated 16th seed Jakub Mensik to advance to the fourth round. The Czech star was trailing 2-6 1-2 before he was forced to retire mid-match.
On the women's side, second seed Coco Gauff was denied the opportunity for revenge as opponent Dayana Yastremska withdrew from their third round match due to an undisclosed illness. The Ukrainian WTA star had defeated Gauff in their opening round match at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships last month, following a rather strong performance during the grass court season.
The top-ranked American will face Lucia Bronzetti in the round of 16, after the Italian overcame a spirited challenge from former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in their third round clash.
