Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of claiming his third consecutive Wimbledon title were crushed after he fell to Jannik Sinner in the final. The Spaniard had beaten the World No.1 five consecutive times before their meeting at the All England Club. After the loss, Alcaraz revealed that he was hurt by it and has learnt some lessons.

Alcaraz was the top favorite to win the Championship after an outstanding form that saw him clinch the Monte Carlo, Italian Open, French Open, and Queen’s Club Championships. In fact, five weeks ago, he had come from two sets down to beat Sinner and claim the Roland Garros for the second consecutive time in his career.

He was also on a 24-match winning streak ahead of his final against Sinner. The last time he lost a match was at the final of the Barcelona Open against Holger Rune. The 22-year-old had also won 20 consecutive matches on the grass court and had never lost a Grand Slam final in his career, with an outstanding 5-0 record.

However, that didn’t matter much to Sinner as he was the better player for most of the encounter at the Center Court. The Italian star lost the first set but did well to immediately take total charge of the game. He eventually flipped the script in style, beating Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to win his first Wimbledon title.

After the heartbreaking defeat, Alcaraz was asked on Tenis en Movistar how he felt after the loss. Without hesitation, Alcaraz revealed that he was proud of his run and performance at the competition before adding that Sinner was better than him on the court:

It’s a learning defeat, it always hurts to lose a Grand Slam final, but you have to look at things from a different perspective. I am happy and proud of what I have done. Today I faced someone with a very high level, there were moments when he didn’t let me breathe, he was better than me. One must accept and learn.

Alcaraz now leaves London with a 48-6 win-loss record, which is really outstanding. But, he will now take the much-needed rest before the North American hard-court swing. The second half of the season will fully kick off at the Canadian Open in Montreal, which begins on July 26. It will precede the Cincinnati Open and the US Open.

Carlos Alcaraz opens up about the difference in feelings between the Paris Olympics and Wimbledon loss

The last time Carlos Alcaraz lost a high-stakes final was at the Paris Olympics. The five-time Grand Slam fell to Novak Djokovic in straight sets, despite being the favorite to win the match. The loss made the Spaniard break down in tears, and it took a longer time for him to get over the heartrending defeat.

But after his Wimbledon loss to Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz sounded calm during his post-match press conference. He revealed that he difference between the Paris Olympic and Wimbledon loss is that he wants to hold the good moments and forget about the bad ones:

Honestly, it’s a very different feeling. Last year, emotionally I felt very bad after that match. It was very hard for me to accept that moment. Today, I think I have learned a lot from those situations, and right now, I am very proud to have reached another Grand Slam final. I want to hold onto the good moments and forget the bad ones, accept what comes. I’m not feeling so bad, I’m happy. I smile because I appreciate having played in a final like this.

Alcaraz still leads Sinner 8-5 in their head-to-head record despite the SW19 defeat. The Spaniard maintained his World No.2 position in the ATP rankings, while Sinner increased the gap with 3,430 lead at the top. Meanwhile, Alcaraz leads in the ATP Live Race to Turin with Sinner in second position after winning his second title of the season.
