Casper Ruud will not play at the Mallorca Championships next week with the Norwegian confirming he has not recovered in time from a knee injury sustained at Roland Garros so will not play any warm-ups before Wimbledon.
Perhaps not a massive shock injury aside with Ruud famously saying that grass is for golf and not for tennis and warming up for Wimbledon with golf over tennis. He has also previously used it as an excuse to follow The Weeknd on tour around Europe instead of being too bothered about the tournament.
Him not playing grass court tournaments as a whole is not surprising, but he did enter this year into the Mallorca Championships. But he was always going to be under a race against time whether due to his grass court dislike or not.
He suffered a knee injury at Roland Garros which saw him lose to Nuno Borges in the second round. Ruud was visibly hampered in the last two sets and was dumped out after a pretty good clay court foray before that came to a crashing halt.
"Just a quick update from my side. I'm back on-court training, and the knee is feeling quite a lot better, but still, unfortunately, not good enough to compete yet. As some of you know, I entered for Mallorca next week, which I unfortunately have to withdraw from," he said on the tournament's social media page.
"I will keep training, keep pushing to be ready for Wimbledon. Mallorca will not be in reach for me. I'm really sorry for the people there, I love Mallorca, I love going there, so hopefully I can come back another time because I was really excited for it. I need to listen to the body, I will keep training, and hopefully, see you back on court soon."
With this being a week before Wimbledon too, he won't take to the court until the grass court major. Albeit in this case it is perhaps best to exercise caution instead of over exertion.
@CasperRuud98 is unable to participate in the #MallorcaChampionships and has just announced his withdrawal from the tournament.
