American Christopher Eubanks has announced his retirement from professional tennis, sharing an emotional and heartfelt message on Instagram that captured the disbelief, gratitude, and joy that defined his unexpected rise in the sport.
“If you had told this little boy from the Southside of Atlanta that he would’ve accomplished all that he did, he wouldn’t believe you,” Eubanks wrote, reflecting on a career that surpassed even his own childhood dreams.
The 28-year-old, known for his towering serve and infectious personality, admitted he never imagined becoming a two-time ACC Player of the Year, much less reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals or representing the United States as an Olympian.
“Yeah, right, no chance, unfathomable,” he said of each milestone, emphasising how surreal those achievements still feel.
Eubanks’ journey was one marked not only by athletic success but by the experiences that came with it. He spoke warmly of the opportunity tennis gave him: the travel, the friendships, the chance to perform on global stages, and the privilege of turning a boyhood dream into reality. “I can’t put into words how blessed I have been,” he wrote, summing up the gratitude that shaped his message.
While he hinted at retirement, Eubanks also left a small window open to maybe come back some day, admitting that nothing is “absolutely the end.” But if this truly is his final goodbye, he’s at peace with it. “It’s been an incredible ride,” he concluded — a line full of the humour and humility that made him a fan favorite.
Whether or not he picks up the racket again, Eubanks leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, positivity, and proof that even the most unlikely dreams can come true.
