Emma Navarro has added another title to her collection, this time taking the trophy in Strasbourg. The American secured her first WTA title in over a year, the third of her career, and her first on clay.
She faced top seed Victoria Mboko in the final of the WTA 500 event, coming through 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 in just over two hours.
On her way to the final, Navarro also got past Sara Bejlek, Zhang Shuai and fellow Americans Iva Jovic and Ann Li.
Navarro later went online to express how much she enjoyed getting back into form. Her win didn’t go unnoticed by world number four Coco Gauff either. The pair recently played doubles together at Indian Wells earlier this year.
Navarro took to Instagram to celebrate her win, posting photos along with the caption: “Happy to be back out there. Thanks Strasbourg for a fun week.”
Gauff was among the first to respond, adding: “Congratulations Emma,” while several other American players also joined in.
McCartney Kessler commented: “Too good! Congrats,” Ashlyn Krueger wrote: “Yay Emma,” and Peyton Stearns simply added: “Congrats!”
French favourite Caroline Garcia also joined in, posting a raised hands emoji. The post drew plenty of attention, with likes from Jessica Pegula, Ben Shelton and Jovic among others.
There won’t be much time for Navarro to celebrate her Strasbourg win, as she’ll now shift focus to Roland Garros, where Janice Tjen is waiting in the first round.
The victory has already given Navarro another boost, with her run lifting her back into the WTA top 30, climbing from 39th to 25th.
She also picked up her first top-10 win of the season against Mboko, giving her another bit of momentum heading into a Grand Slam.
A deep run in Paris still looks challenging. Should she get past Tjen, she’ll face either Jovic or Alexandra Eala in the next round.
This will be just her fourth appearance at Roland Garros and she’s yet to make it past the fourth round.
Historically, it’s been her toughest major. She’s reached the semifinals at the US Open and made quarterfinal appearances at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
