In a new Daily Dose of Social Media, Carlos Alcaraz had a discussion with the chair umpire during his match against Jaume Munar at the Queen's Club Championships, due to a controversial time-violation.
Meanwhile, at the Berlin Ladies Open, the doubles pair of Paula Badosa and Ons Jabeur are turning heads in the doubles draw – while both remain alive in the tournament's quarterfinals. On the other hand, Coco Gauff lamented her surprising first-round defeat.
Carlos Alcaraz was the protagonist of an unusual warning at the ATP 500 Queen's. The world No. 2, who was playing in the Round of 16 of the London tournament against Jaume Munar, received a penalty that led to a discussion with the match umpire.
This all happened during the second set. With the match at 5-5, the Spaniard went to get his towel to wipe off sweat. However, according to the chair umpire, Carlitos exceeded the time limit and sanctioned him with a warning. Faced with the warning, Alcaraz got annoyed and went to talk to the umpire: "I have to go for my towel. I need to do my routine." Nevertheless, the situation didn't change for him as the penalty remained applied.
Despite this, the five-time Grand Slam champion ultimately secured an agonizing victory against his compatriot. The world No. 2 won the match 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-5, after squandering a couple of match points in the second set and coming back from a break down in the third set. Alcaraz will face Arthur Rinderknech in the Queen's quarterfinals during the afternoon session at Queen's Club.
Coco Gauff lamented her debut loss at the Berlin Ladies Open against Xinyu Wang, falling 3-6, 3-6. The World No. 2 lost in her first appearance on grass courts after winning her second Grand Slam title at the recent French Open. The American makes an early exit from the tournament and won't add more matches on the surface before Wimbledon.
In a social media post, Gauff reflected on her time in Berlin and mentioned that she hopes to return next year and achieve a better performance. "It was a tough one today but happy to be back on court :)," she posted. "Tried my best to adjust with the quick turnaround but it wasn’t enough. As always, I’m learning as I go so I hope to do better next time. Thank you Berlin for the short but sweet visit, I’ll come back stronger next year."
“I wish I could give this kit some more screen time as it’s definitely one of my favs but i’m excited to get some more practices in to be ready for Wimbledon, see you guys soon!”
ATP stars shared their predictions for the FIFA World Cup, attempting to guess which teams would reach the tournament semifinals, what the final would be, and who would be crowned champion. Featuring the participation of Grigor Dimitrov, Andrey Rublev, and Francisco Cerundolo , among others, the stars had different answers, though Real Madrid and PSG were the most repeated picks—at least for the semifinals. Argentina's Cerundolo didn't hesitate to choose River Plate—the team he supports—as champion, while Dimitrov anticipated PSG as the winner. Check out the video below for the complete predictions from the players who competed last week at the Queen's Club Championships.
Legendary boxer Mike Tyson was the special guest at the Berlin Ladies Open, adding a unique celebrity touch to the event. Tyson attended alongside his wife to watch his compatriot Coco Gauff, who was defeated in the Round of 16 by Xinyu Wang. He also enjoyed watching former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina's victory over Czech Katerina Siniakova. His visit added an unexpected layer of star power to the Berlin Ladies Open, a key grass-court warm-up tournament for Wimbledon. 'Iron Mike' has made several appearances at some of the Tour's most important events, including Roland Garros and the US Open.
Paula Badosa and Ons Jabeur are having a fantastic time as a doubles pair at the Berlin Ladies Open, celebrating a new victory that sends them to the tournament semifinals. Both players decided to compete in doubles in an unprecedented association to gain more matches on grass courts, as they prepare for Wimbledon – in addition to competing in the singles draw in Berlin.
Badosa and Jabeur defeated Desirae Krawczyk and Storm Sanders in the first round (6-2, 0-6, [10-8]), and today they easily overcame Luiza Stefani and Timea Babos in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win. The duo will face Italian first seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals this Saturday. Errani and Paolini are recent champions at Roland Garros and Rome Open, boasting a 13-match winning streak in doubles.
Meanwhile, both Jabeur and Badosa are still alive in the Berlin singles draw: Jabeur will face Marketa Vondrousova – in a rematch of the 2023 Wimbledon final – while Badosa will play the surprising Xinyu Wang – a qualifier who eliminated World No. 2 Coco Gauff.
