World number fourteen Karolina Muchova has revealed the truth around her current injury situation. Being forced to switch to a one-handed backhand, just like Corentin Moutet had to, it appears that the injury Muchova has sustained is likely to be continuous, and the Czech tennis star will have to adapt going forward if she wants to continue playing.
After making her breakthrough at Roland Garros in 2023, where she reached the final but eventually lost out to Iga Swiatek, who proved to be too difficult a task for Muchova, the world number fourteen has been playing catch-up while trying to recover from a left wrist injury that was plaguing her at the time. Muchova underwent surgery on this injury just over a year ago, but she still seems to be having problems with her wrist to this day. As a result, Muchova has been adapting her game over the past year so she can remain an active player, making small changes that don’t put as much strain on her body but still keep her competitive.
Despite making these changes, Muchova is still not out of the woods yet, with the possibility of needing yet another surgery in the near future. She has continued attending rehabilitation appointments as the former Grand Slam finalist bids to return to her former glory.
While speaking to the official WTA website, Karolina Muchova said: “I think that on grass, I am quite uncomfortable to play, and the slice is a great tactic, so I chose to fight and gain experience in matches, and maybe even score some victories”.
Muchova would go on to explain more about her current struggles: “I love sports and love playing, I didn’t want to miss out on anything because of my left wrist."
"I just try to figure out where to play, how to play tactically with this disadvantage… I would lie if I said I am very positive. It is very frustrating. Sometimes I think: ‘Damn, if I could hit with two hands, it would be much easier,’ but I try to put that aside and focus on the positive things. I am studying more tactics, especially on serve, especially on grass. I am focusing on placement, on speed to put players in uncomfortable positions".
Clearly frustrated by her ongoing struggles, Muchova remains confident she can continue to climb the rankings and demonstrate her abilities even with a much weaker backhand.
“I take it as it is. I do not want to say that I have bad luck. I think I do a lot to prevent these things from happening to my body, but they happen. I try everything I can to prevent it from happening again, but so far there is always something. That’s just the way it is. Something happens, you try to regain health. It’s a shame, but that’s how sports are. It’s a brutal sport".
We can only hope that Karolina Muchova regains full strength in her wrist in the near future. If this were to happen, then perhaps she could go one step further and win her first ever Grand Slam title.
