David Kirouac-Imagn Images

Emma Raducanu debuted with a triumph at the Canadian Open, maintaining her strong form by defeating Elena Gabriela Ruse 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the Round of 32. The former US Open champion continues to play at a high level in this American hardcourt swing and secures another victory.

First Set: Raducanu fights off early Scare, Dominates Late

In the beginning, Ruse started better, comfortably holding her first couple of service games, while immediately putting pressure on the Brit's first service game. The Romanian had up to 5 break points early on and seemed close to getting the break, but Raducanu managed to get ahead after a complicated moment.

Parity was maintained until 2-2 without either player managing to take the lead. At that moment, it was Raducanu who took control of the match due to the Romanian's errors. Raducanu secured the break in the 5th game to love, and went on to win 12 of the next 15 points after 2-2. The former US Open champion took command of the set and ended up taking the lead 6-2 after 41 minutes.

Second Set: Raducanu Holds Nerve Through Tense Exchanges to Seal Victory

The second set began with Raducanu securing an early break in the first game, achieving her 6th consecutive game in her favor. However, the Romanian quickly broke back, and things became tense again in the match, especially after Raducanu saved two break points against her in the third game.

Things remained even for a good part of the set. After 3-3, there were cross-breaks and the final moments of the set were full of tension. Then Raducanu was the one who showed composure to go for the victory, getting the break in the 9th game and closing out the victory 6-2, 6-4.

The Brit once again put in a good performance, with 66% first serve in, winning 59% of those points. She converted 5/8 break points, while Ruse only converted 2/7 opportunities. Raducanu's effectiveness in key moments ultimately determined the victory in her favor.

In the next round, she will face 32nd seed Peyton Stearns, with whom she has two previous encounters, both on hardcourts in 2024, with straight-sets victories for Raducanu on both occasions.
