In a candid and heartfelt conversation with Diary of a Professional Tennis Coach, Emma Raducanu’s former coach Vlado Platenik has opened up about his brief but positive coaching stint with British tennis star Emma Raducanu, revealing the emotional and professional dynamics behind their sudden split. Speaking for the first time since the end of their cooperation, Platenik emphasized the mutual respect he shared with Emma and her father, Ion Raducanu.

“I was really happy, because I never heard a father thank me so many times that he thanked me after the practices,” said Platenik. “He was like, ‘Wow, you are doing everything what I wish a coach would do with my daughter, and she was improving’, and we were having discussions and like I said, it’s understandable, and I want to educate the parents, and I want to tell them what I'm working on with the player, and because I want them to feel comfortable that, you know, they can put the kid in my hands. You know what I mean?” he added.

Platenik went on to reveal that despite a successful week with her at the Miami Open earlier this year, he was surprised to hear that Emma Raducanu wanted to try out some other familiar names, before finalizing a coach. He went on to say that, this could have been due the British media pressure as well as the weight of her own expectations.

Raducanu’s father, Ion Raducanu was also equally surprised with her daughter’s decision. However, they parted ways amicably and had no bad blood between them.

“So, and he was as surprised as me, you know, when Emma stopped the cooperation. But I told him, it's okay, Ion, it's fine, you know, don't worry,” said Platenik.

“So, I was actually very good with Ian. And like I said, Emma was just little bit stressed, so and I told him, it's I don't blame you. I don't blame her. It's just too much pressure. And she was not doing well for such a long time, since he was open. And probably she wants to win another grand slam, and she wants to prove everybody that she can do it,” he added.

“I said, like, if she decides to work later with me because it was just too fast or whatever, and like, I said, she was playing good and she was improving, and then, you know, I told him that it’s absolutely no bad feelings,” added Platenik.

“Which is a bad motivation, because, like I said, if you want to prove people that you can do something, it's most of the time you will not succeed. You know, it has to be you. You have to do it for yourself. You have to be happy with what you are doing. You have to see that you are improving, you know, kind of, you know, and trust the coach and trust the people around you,” said Patenik.

Platenik emphasized that both parties departed on amicable terms and he hopes to work with Raducanu again in the future. Emma Raducanu is currently working alongside Mark Petchey for the French Open, who is also juggling commentary duties alongside coaching Raducanu.
