The 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals is just days away, and some of the best WTA players will turn up in Shenzhen, China, to vie for the prestigious team competition. Last year, Italy defeated surprise finalists Slovakia to capture its fifth title. Italy will be one of eight nations at the event. Joining the defending champions will be host nation China. Six countries qualified for the competition after winning their group ties back in April. These are the USA., Great Britain, Spain, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Japan.
Team captains have finalised their list of nominated players who will take part in this year’s Finals, and among them will be a total of five Top 10 stars. So who are they?
Madison Keys is the highest-ranked player in the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. Coco Gauff was surprisingly left out by captain Lindsay Davenport. This means Keys could be tasked to take over as the country’s #1 singles player in the competition. Keys made her BJK Cup debut in 2014, but has not played in this tournament since 2022. She arrives in Shenzhen having lost three of her last five matches.
On paper, the U.S.A. team is considered the favorite for the title as they boast two top 10 players in their ranks. The second is Jessica Pegula, who is coming off a semifinal run at the US Open. Pegula’s last appearance for her country in this competition was in the 2024 qualifiers and has a 5-1 record in BJK Cup singles matches.
Representing the defending champions Italy is Jasmine Paolini. She will be tasked to be the country’s #1 singles player. After a sensational 2024 season, Paolini has done remarkably well to defend most of her ranking points and retain her Top 10 spot.
The host nation’s biggest hope is Qinwen Zheng. She is no stranger to defying the odds. Zheng became China’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist in tennis (singles) when she defeated Iga Swiatek en route to the Paris Olympics final. Zheng has been out of action since July to undergo elbow surgery and will hand her country a major boost if she is fit to play.
Elena Rybakina has also committed to playing the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup. Kazakhstan might be the surprise package this year. The country has never won this competition since its maiden appearance in 1995. But with Rybakina re-entering the Top 10 and rediscovering her form, she will be crucial in their progress.
