Goran Ivanisevic Gives His Verdict on Novak Djokovic’s 'Last' Grand Slam Hope at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic is seeking to win his 25th Grand Slam at the 2025 Wimbledon Championship. However, there have been debates about whether the tournament is his final chance of reaching the major title milestone in his career. His former coach Goran Ivanisevic has revealed that it’s not the 38-year-old’s last chance of winning a Slam.

Djokovic has not been able to take his Grand Slam tally to 25 since winning his 24th at the US Open in 2023. The Serbian has managed to reach one final since then, while getting to three semi-finals. Also, at Wimbledon, he’s seeking to tie Roger Federer’s record of eight singles Wimbledon titles, as Djokovic currently has seven.

Examining the draw, Djokovic was projected to face Jack Draper in the quarter-finals, but the British star crashed out in the second round. That leaves the 24-time Grand Slam winner with an opportunity to easily reach the semi-finals, where he could face Jannik Sinner for the second consecutive time in a Grand Slam event.

Nevertheless, Goran Ivanisevic believes that Djokovic has a clear chance of winning the title after a record number of seeded players crashed out of the tournament. He added during an interview with Clay Tennis that Djokovic has never lost to Sinner at Wimbledon:

Looking at the draw, I don’t think no one can beat Djokovic before the semis, and he’s never lost to Sinner here. OK, Australian Open and Roland Garros, but here Novak’s beaten him twice. In my view, Novak’s the favorite, no matter how sentimental that sounds.

Ivanisevic then pointed out that he disagrees with those saying that the 2025 Wimbledon is Djokovic’s last chance of winning a Grand Slam. He revealed that the Serbian is currently the best grass-court player:

Alcaraz has beaten him twice, but last year, Novak came after knee surgery, and in 2023, we all remember how close it was. Everyone says this is his last chance — I don’t agree. Plus, he’s the best grass-court player, experienced, and he knows exactly what it takes here. It’ll be fascinating.

Djokovic met Sinner in Wimbledon in 2022 and 2023, beating the Italian star on both occasions. However, in their last three meetings on tour, Djokovic has lost to the World No.1, including their recent meeting at the French Open, where Sinner defeated the Serbian in straight sets to reach the final.

Novak Djokovic’s ex-coach believes he can compete at the 2028 Olympics

Novak Djokovic is 38 and currently the oldest player in the Top 20 of the ATP rankings. Several players, who reached his age struggled with injuries and decided to retire, but the former World No.1 keeps fighting for more titles. He also revealed that he would love to play at the 2028 LA Olympics.

Goran Ivanisevic was asked if he could still be fit to compete at the tournament, considering he will become 41 by then. The legendary coach revealed during the aforementioned interview that Djokovic can play but the motivation has to be there:

When I was his coach, it was great, but you’re always focused — what will he say, what to look for. Now I could just enjoy it. Such ease of movement, ease of play — the ball flies at 300 km/h thanks to his technique and timing. If you look at that, he can play until LA. Motivation is another matter — showing up, training — he’s 38. But here, he looks ready, playing well, I get the sense he sees his opportunity.

Djokovic claimed his elusive Olympic gold medal in Paris last year after beating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. He has often revealed that winning the medal was the biggest accomplishment of his career.
