'Grass season is coming, it's just the beginning': Joao Fonseca shifts focus after Jack Draper thumping
Sipa Press

Joao Fonseca is looking to move swiftly on as his goals continue despite a humbling defeat to Jack Draper in the third round of the 2025 French Open.

Fonseca was beat down in three sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in favour of Draper who looked every inch of the World No.5 that he is. He moves forward while Fonseca who has whipped up a frenzy akin to Gustavo Kuerten will now play grass.

He has moved swiftly onto the surface after his loss as he continues to make waves and attract fans but has not got that standout display yet at a Grand Slam. Albeit against Draper it is pretty difficult.

He said that he also wants to play the main draws of all the top events first of all and be seeded by the Australian Open. Not entirely lofty goals like winning a Grand Slam but ones that certainly would make his job a hell of a lot easier than it is now encountering top names very early on.

“A goal? I wanna play the big tournaments. I mean, now with my ranking I can play. But I wanna play like the main draw of the 500s, all of them. Maybe top 40 or something like that. The goal for me at the end of the year maybe is to be a seeded player in Australia. It’s my personal goal," said Fonseca post match.

"I know we need time. We need good weeks and results. Like you said, I’m improving and learning. I’m not feeling bad about this loss today. He’s a great player. I know I didn’t play my best. Now we need to move on and think about the next weeks. Grass season is coming. It’s just the beginning. We keep learning and practicing.”
