Ben Shelton, after advancing to the fourth round of Wimbledon, offered his insights on which of his peers possess the best understanding of the game. The American has enjoyed a stellar campaign at the All England Club, most recently defeating Márton Fucsovics to secure his spot in the second week without dropping a single set.
Shelton, who is set to face Lorenzo Sonego in the third round, emphasized the importance of strategizing effectively based on the opponent. One of the recurring topics at the tournament recently has been players' "tennis IQ," with some, like Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, identifying colleagues they believe have a superior grasp of the game.
This time, it was Shelton's turn, and he cited two of his compatriots as players he admires for their on-court intelligence. "Fritz has a very analytical mind; he knows why he wins or loses as soon as he steps off the court. He talks to his team during the match, telling them the adjustments he thinks he needs to make. Tiafoe is also very good at making decisions on the fly; he analyzes everything very quickly."
However, the World No. 10 considers the 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to have had the greatest influence on him. Shelton is one of the ATP Tour representatives sponsored by the ON brand, which Federer co-owns and counts Iga Swiatek and Joao Fonseca among its other ambassadors.
"But for me, what impacted me most were my conversations with Federer," Shelton mentioned. "He watches tennis constantly, is able to simplify the game in incredible ways, and is passionate about the sport. I've spoken with him several times about tennis tactics, and I've been impressed."
