'Hopefully this one will stick forever': Iga Swiatek celebrates Taylor Swift’s engagement after US Open win

Iga Swiatek opened her US Open campaign with a confident victory against Emiliana Arango by 6-1, 6-2, and while her tennis was the main attraction, much of the conversation in her press conference quickly turned to an unexpected topic: Taylor Swift. The Polish world No. 1, known for her sharp focus and relentless work ethic, showed a lighter side as she shared her admiration for the global pop star, whose personal life and music have been a source of inspiration for her since her teenage years.

Swiatek admitted that the first rounds of Grand Slam tournaments always carry a unique set of challenges, with players adapting to conditions that feel different from the practice courts. For her, the win was not just about progressing to the next stage, but about settling into the rhythm of the fortnight. “First matches are always a little bit different,” she said. “I’m happy that I had some time to get used to the conditions and the surface. I think it was just a solid match, and I’m happy that I can play another one here.”

But once the tennis questions gave way to lighter fare, Swiatek’s face lit up as she discussed Swift’s reported engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce. Her team had shown her the news on Instagram immediately after her match, and the 23-year-old could not hide her excitement. “I’m just happy for her, because she deserves the best,” she said. “Hopefully this one will stick forever. Travis seems like a great guy, and she seems super happy, so I wish them all the best.”

That enthusiasm comes from more than casual fandom. Swiatek explained that she has followed Swift’s career since 2014, keeping up with updates on fan pages and listening to each new album. She admitted to drifting away during the Reputation era, only to be drawn back in during the pandemic when Folklore and Evermore were released. “I didn’t really like Reputation at first,” she confessed. “But now I do—don’t worry.” For her, Swift’s music has been a constant companion, one that fits alongside the highs and lows of life on tour.

Sliding, shoes, and staying grounded

When the conversation eventually shifted back to tennis, Swiatek was asked about her ability to slide so effectively on hard courts, a skill usually associated with clay. She explained that while the decision-making process and technique remain consistent, the feel of the movement is very different depending on the surface. On clay, shorter and softer slides are common, while hard courts require more speed and precise timing due to the stronger grip.

Her commitment to detail even extends to her footwear. Swiatek revealed that she uses a new pair of shoes for every match, not because they wear out, but because she is sensitive to even the smallest changes in grip and feel. “Normal people could play in them for a month,” she laughed, “but I feel the difference in just a few centimetres, so I always want the exact same feeling.”

Comfort in New York

Discussing her history at the US Open, Swiatek admitted that competing in New York has never been simple. In 2022 she arrived during what she described as one of the toughest slumps of her career, yet she still found a way to win the title. This year, she feels more prepared to handle the unique energy of the city. “New York is just so loud, and it’s hard to find balance,” she said. “But I think I’m good at being in my bubble compared to other players. There are a lot of positive vibes in the team, so it’s all good.”

Świątek’s reflections highlight not only her growth as a competitor, but also her maturity in handling the mental demands of the sport. The ability to shut out distractions while embracing the chaos of New York is no small task, yet she appears increasingly comfortable navigating it all.

Respect for rivalries

Beyond Swift and her own performance, Swiatek was also asked about the Hall of Fame ceremony that saw Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova come together in a moment of mutual respect. For Swiatek, who grew up watching their fierce rivalry, it was an inspiring reminder of the bigger picture. “It’s a shame it didn’t happen before, but I guess if you have good intentions, you can work through anything,” she said. “Having appreciation from your biggest rival must be a great feeling. They’re both great, and I was just happy to see them together.”

That sentiment encapsulates Swiatek’s outlook—fierce competitor on the court, but thoughtful and reflective off it. Her blend of seriousness about tennis and genuine joy in her passions outside of it make her one of the most relatable champions on tour. Whether she’s sliding across Arthur Ashe Stadium or dissecting the Easter eggs in a Taylor Swift interview, Iga Swiatek continues to show why she is both a global tennis star and a grounded, authentic young woman navigating her rise at the top of the sport.
