Cameron Norrie spoke about what Nicolas Jarry told him after their Wimbledon fourth-round match. The Chilean was seen in a discussion with the umpire during the match due to what he considered a distraction from his opponent. The Brit clinched the victory in 5 sets: 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-7(5), 6-3.
Norrie survived a tough battle where it seemed the Chilean might come back from two sets down—just as he did against Holger Rune in the first round—but ultimately fell to Norrie's consistency. Jarry didn't miss the opportunity at the end of the match to reproach Norrie about something that wasn't clearly audible.
The World No. 61 returned to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time in his career (the previous was in 2022), and he was all smiles after the win. Norrie didn't want to get involved in further controversy when asked about Nico's message after the match. "He said I was a little bit vocal and I think that's my energy. I was pulling from my team and then I just said 'man, you competed so well and hung in there so well and it was an amazing competitive match,'” the former Indian Wells champion said.
"I think credit to Nicolas for staying with me. He played better than me in both tiebreaks and deserved it,” the Brit added. "I didn't want to let his game style bother me. I had to keep fighting and I forgot to get my coach a birthday present, it's his birthday today. I had to get him something so I got him the win."
Norrie is preparing to step back onto the court this Thursday against two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Norrie will aim to repeat his 2022 performance—which was the last time a local player, male or female, reached the tournament semifinals, and the only one since Andy Murray won the title in 2016.
A special present indeed
