'I would have to say Novak,' Former British No. 1 backs Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon title despite his struggles in the 2024 season
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Former British No. 1 Andrew Castle backs Novak Djokovic to win the title at 2024 Wimbledon despite the Serbian’s struggles in the 2024 season so far. Although Djokovic has not won a title yet in the new season, Castle feels the 24-time Grand Slam champion will enter the grass-court Grand Slam tournament as a title favorite.

Castle said that Djokovic has won seven titles at The Championships already and knows how to win on grass. The Briton claimed that, unlike other surfaces, grass court is tough to get quickly accustomed to and hence, a proven winner is likely to take the title home.

If you ask me who is going to win Wimbledon on the men’s side, I would have to say Novak. If you were betting on someone, why would you bet against the bloke who has done it all before? I think grass is the most specialist of all the surfaces. Some players don’t really think they have got a chance on it. There are less surprise winners likely to emerge at Wimbledon...You really need to believe you can do it and Novak knows that. Andrew Castle said about Novak Djokovic to Tennis 365 at a Game4Padel event

Notably, Djokovic came agonizingly close to winning his eighth title at Wimbledon last year. However, the Serbian was denied a chance by Carlos Alcaraz who won his maiden Grand Slam tournament on grass. The Spaniard won the match in five marathon sets and also denied Djokovic a chance to complete a Calendar slam.

Andrew Castle feels Novak Djokovic is the man to beat despite emerging superstars

Castle further talked about Novak Djokovic‘s level and claimed that the Serbian is still the man to beat despite emerging superstars. The Briton feels with Roger Federer retired and Rafael Nadal struggling with injuries, Djokovic enjoys an upper hand over anyone.

Castle acknowledged that there are emerging players but stuck with his claim about Djokovic being the man to beat.

The generation that spawned these all-time greats of our sport is coming to a close. Roger has gone, Rafa is coming towards the end of his career and things are changing. We have great new champions coming through, so it’s going to be a fascinating few months, but I still feel Novak is the man to beat when we get to Wimbledon. Andrew Castle said

While Castle backs Djokovic to win the title in Wimbledon, the Serbian is still figuring out a way to get back the winning ways. The 36-year-old has been stunned quite a few times in the ongoing season. While Djokovic lost to Jannik Sinner in Australia, he lost to Luca Nardi in Indian Wells, followed by a defeat to Casper Ruud in Monte Carlo.

On Sunday, the Serbian was handed yet another defeat as he took on Alejandro Tabilo in the third round of the Rome Masters. Djokovic lost in straight sets and was left nothing but disappointed. It remains to be seen how the 24-time Grand Slam champion picks up pace before he proves Castle right.
