Iga Swiatek is not the outright favorite for this year’s Roland Garros. This is something that none of the tennis fans expected coming into the clay-court season. With tenacity and brilliance, the Polish star has dominated the clay courts in the past five years. However, something has not clicked in 2025 thus far.
Swiatek still has time on her side as she’s only 23, but the game doesn’t seem like a player who has yet to hit her peak. The former World No.1 has won five Grand Slam titles in her career, four of which have come in the French capital. As the three-time defending champion, the Pole has usually confidently taken to Garros. However, there are more question marks than answers right now for her.
After the Italian Open loss against Danielle Collins, Swiatek was in a rough mood. As per the reports from tennis.com, she said, “Obviously it would be stupid to expect a lot because I’m not able to play my game right now. I think I just wasn’t present to fight and to compete. I focused on mistakes, and it’s my mistake, and I’m not doing things right. The focus is on the wrong things from my side, and I’ll try to change it.”
“For sure, I’m doing something wrong, so I need to just regroup and change some stuff. I heard some ideas from the team, so I’ll just try to do that in next weeks.” Swiatek added.
Swiatek dominated the clay courts in 2024, with a 21-1 record on that surface. However, things have suddenly switched off since the Paris Olympic loss to Qinwen Zheng. Since then, the Polish star has developed a semifinal curse, losing all five finals she has played. Ironically, the last title she won was the previous year’s Roland Garros. Swiatek has not played in the WTA final since winning her fifth Grand Slam title in Paris the prior year.
In 2025, the problems have only increased. The semifinal loss against Coco Gauff at the Madrid Open was beyond shocking. However, the problems were put under the carpet as the former World No.1 was reportedly playing the match after her grandfather’s demise. However, the problems only increased when she lost in the second round to Danielle Collins.
The Grand Slams are a different kind of fish for the best players. Swiatek has shown that she has performed in the biggest stadiums. Earlier this year, she lost to Madison Keys in the Australian Open semifinals despite having a match point on her serve. Hence, it shows that she still has it to go deep in important events against the best players. For now, she needs to improve herself mentally and have a bit of luck. Because losing from match points up usually boils down to bad luck.
The good news is that Swiatek has confirmed that she won’t be absent from Wimbledon, denying the reports surfacing regarding her participation at SW19. However, things won’t get better if she maintains these standards. On her favorite surface (clay), she has to dust herself down and go again. Otherwise, things will fall apart for the rest of the season, and the starting point will be her WTA ranking.
