Former world number one Andy Murray has lambasted Wimbledon organisers for deciding the fourth-round encounter. In the round of 16 clash of the men's singles category between Jannik Sinner and Grigor Dimitrov, organisers decided to close the roof despite there being more than one hour left in the deadline to end the proceedings on the day.
That decision did not go down well with Murray, who, in a post on his official account on the social media platform X, criticised the decision. "So ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match," he wrote. "At least an hour of light left. Well over a set of tennis can still be played. It's an outdoor tournament."
The match ended on a sour note as Dimitrov, who was leading two sets to nil against the reigning world number one Sinner, was forced to retire in the third set with two games all. The whole episode left Sinner sad as well, who expressed his sentiments while talking to the BBC after the match.
"I don't know what to say," he said. "He is an incredible player, I think we all saw this today. He has been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player, a good friend of mine also. We understand each other very well off the court and seeing him in this position. If there were a chance he could play the next round, he would deserve it, but mostly I hope he has a speedy recovery. Very unlucky from his side, I don't take this as a win at all. This is just a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us. And I think already in the last Grand Slams, he has struggled a lot with injuries and seeing him have this kind of injury again is very, very tough. We all saw with his reaction how much he cares about the sport. He is one of the hardest-working players on Tour. Thank you for coming, but this is not the ending we want to see. This is very sad. We all wish him the best, let's give him an applause for him and his team."
