Jannik Sinner addressed comparisons to the Big Three after his epic French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz. The world No. 1 and No. 2 starred in the longest final in Roland Garros history – and many are already nominating it as one of the best matches ever.
It was a true rollercoaster, with Sinner two sets up, but unable to capitalize on a good lead. In the fourth set, he lost three match points and ultimately allowed Alcaraz's comeback, with the Spaniard claiming the title 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6[10-2].
The match was the second-longest major final in history – totaling 5 hours and 29 minutes, only behind Novak Djokovic versus Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open 2012, where the Serb ultimately prevailed after 5 hours and 53 minutes.
In his press conference, Sinner was asked about the level he displayed alongside Alcaraz in the final, and if he believes it's on par with what members of the Big Three achieved in their own era.
"I was lucky enough to play against Novak, against Rafa. In Grand Slams, Roger I never played, unfortunately. Beating these guys, it takes a lot. I have the same feeling with Carlos and some other players,” the three-time Grand Slam champion commented.
“It's good to see that we can produce also tennis like this, because I think it's good for the whole movement of tennis and the crowd. It was a good atmosphere today, no, and also to be part of it, it's very special.”
“Of course, I'm happy to be part of this. Would be even more happy if I would have here the big trophy. But, yeah, as I said, you can't change it now."
Sinner must now move past perhaps the most painful defeat of his career. Alcaraz extends his head-to-head lead to 8-4, having won their last five encounters – three of them in finals. Sinner had the chance to equal Alcaraz in major titles, but 'Carlitos' ultimately extended his tally to 5, while Sinner remained at 3. Their next encounter could be at Wimbledon – in three weeks – where they will again be the first and second seeds of the tournament.
