Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has made his intentions clear on winning another Grand Slam title, and the former World No.1 may look to a familiar location as his last stand, according to Rennae Stubbs.
Last year the 24-time Major champion shifted his focus to adding another major to his resume, but has fallen short at the semifinal stage at each Grand Slam this year. Djokovic lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in three sets at the recently-concluded Wimbledon Championships, and will set his sights on the US Open in an attempt to capture the elusive 25th Major title.
Following his loss to Sinner, there has been more speculation regarding the 38-year old's retirement. Although Djokovic said he plans on returning to the All England Club next season, his age and recurring injuries have planted doubt in the minds of many regarding his immediate future.
On an episode of the Renna Stubbs podcast, the retired Australian pro said she believes Djokovic might call and end to his career sooner than most people anticipate.
"I think he has sort of hinted that the last Grand Slam will be the Australian Open, and I think the reason for that is because it has been his most successful, winning it nine times," explained Stubbs. “I think it’s not a bad way for him to go out if he decides to. It has clearly been the best place for him to win a Grand Slam. If he can get to 25, that is probably where he is going to do it.
“I thought his best chance was at Wimbledon, that has slipped away, but I think he probably almost feels that the Australian has been so mercurial in his life, he has had so many dramatic moments in his life, where he was treated very poorly by the Australian government. So it’s an interesting dichotomy, but I think that is where he wants to finish his career, and that is where I think probably will be his last Grand Slam."
With both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz yet to hit their prime, Djokovic faces an uphill battle in his attempt to claim a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.
I want to congratulate Jannik on a great performance. It’s been very special being back at SW19, sharing the buzz and having my family with me. Thank you Wimbledon, the tournament of dreams . And to the fans, your support means everything. You have my heart. See you soon pic.twitter.com/NPn8G420Sq
