Jannik Sinner Cancels Scheduled Practice Amid Injury Concerns Ahead of Ben Shelton Clash at Wimbledon

An unfortunate slip caused an injury to Jannik Sinner’s elbow in the first set of the Italian’s fourth round Wimbledon match. The Italian was in fine form in his previous rounds, not dropping a set on his way until then.

The match witnessed another injury too which happened to his opponent Grigor Dimitrov. Dimitrov was leading two sets to love against the World No. 1 when he was forced to retire due to an injury to the pectoral muscle.

After the Bulgarian’s heartbreaking injury, Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Following the match, Sinner opened up about his elbow injury, informing that he would undergo an MRI scan the next day to assess his situation.

Sinner, who had scheduled a 4pm practice time at Aorangi Park on Tuesday, did not show up for the session and has not been seen at the All England Club that day.

Moreover, the 23-year-old had fired two members of his entourage — physiotherapist Ulises Badio and fitness coach Marco Panichi – shortly ahead of Wimbledon without explanation. The two were replacements for his former physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi and fitness coach Umberto Ferrara, who were sacked following his doping scandal wherein he was tested positive twice for clostebol last year.

Jannik Sinner chose to practice indoors

Although he cancelled his session at Aorangi Park, it was later revealed that Jannik Sinner trained with his team in an indoor court ahead of the Wimbledon quarterfinal clash.

Sinner’s best run at Wimbledon was in 2023, where he reached the semifinal, losing to seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Sinner has one title on grass so far, and that came at the Halle Open last year.

Jannik Sinner will meet Ben Shelton in his next round at Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner will face Ben Shelton in the Wimbledon quarterfinal at Court 1 on Wednesday. Sinner will play his fourth consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal while Shelton will be playing his first. Before his fourth round, Sinner had defeated Luca Nardi, Aleksandar Vukic and Pedro Martinez. Dropping just 17 games, he even surpassed Roger Federer (19) for dropping the least number of games to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, a record the Swiss made in 2004.

Shelton had a decent grass swing coming into SW19, having reached the semifinal of the Stuttgart Open. The American overcame Alex Bolt, Rinky Hijikata, Marton Fucsovics, and Lorenzo Sonego in his previous rounds at Wimbledon and is in good form. The quarterfinal will mark the sixth meeting on court between Shelton and Sinner. Sinner leads their head-to-head 5-1, with all the five wins being straight sets victories.

Four of them have come on hard court and one on grass at Wimbledon last year. Their most recent meeting was at the Australian Open semifinal earlier this year. If Sinner is in good health, he could potentially meet 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinal and two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon finals.
