Jannik Sinner advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals under unusual circumstances after Grigor Dimitrov retired from their match on July 7. Dimitrov was leading by two sets when he suddenly suffered an injury, ending what had been a promising performance.

Sinner, already nursing a sore elbow, immediately rushed to Dimitrov’s side when the Bulgarian collapsed in pain after serving an ace. Showing genuine concern, Sinner knelt beside him and offered words of sympathy and support as medical staff arrived to assist. The moment drew applause from the crowd for its sportsmanship.

He’s been so unlucky in the past couple years.. if there would be a chance that he could play the next round, he would deserve it.

After receiving medical attention, Dimitrov briefly left the court. He soon returned only to inform Sinner that he could not continue, leading to a heartfelt exchange between the two players as Dimitrov became emotional.

Injuries have plagued Dimitrov in recent years, including a retirement at the same stage last year against Daniil Medvedev. Sinner, now into the last eight, is set to meet American Ben Shelton, provided he can overcome his own physical setback.

Jannik Sinner’s injury revealed

World No.1 Jannik Sinner gave fans a scare early in the match when he slipped and appeared to injure his elbow. The fall looked painful, and he received extended treatment from the physio.

The medical staff carefully examined and worked on his elbow. Sinner showed visible discomfort during the process, and his usual consistency seemed to be missing afterward.

With Sinner looking out of rhythm, Grigor Dimitrov took full advantage. He landed big serves and kept the top seed under pressure, sensing a possible upset on the cards.

However, Dimitrov’s own misfortune changed the course of the match. His injury forced him to retire, giving Sinner a lifeline just when he needed it most.

The cycle of Grigor Dimitrov’s injuries

Grigor Dimitrov ’s injury troubles began at Wimbledon last year when he slipped and hurt his knee in the first set against Daniil Medvedev. A couple of months later, he retired during the US Open quarter-finals due to ongoing physical problems.

His bad luck continued in January at the Australian Open, where he pulled out of his first match with a groin injury. In May, at Roland Garros, he suffered a leg issue in the first round and retired once again. Wimbledon marked his return to competition after that setback.

Despite low expectations this year, Dimitrov played impressively on the grass courts. He came close to a huge win over the world No. 1, which would have been his second such victory — the first being over Novak Djokovic in Madrid back in 2013.

Sinner had breezed through the earlier rounds, dropping only 17 games — tying Jan Kodes’ 1972 Open Era record. But against Dimitrov, he was finally tested. Even so, the Italian remains on course for his first Wimbledon crown and a fourth Grand Slam title.
