Jannik Sinner Reveals Key Reasons Behind Turning Head-to-Head Rivalry Around Against Novak Djokovic After Reaching Wimbledon Final

Novak Djokovic had not lost a Wimbledon semifinal since 2017 until this Friday. The seven-time champion’s run was ended by World No. 1 Jannik Sinner . Sinner has now defeated Djokovic five times in a row, a feat that only Rafael Nadal had done before. The Italian, who reached his maiden Wimbledon final, has improved vastly on grass after facing defeat to Djokovic twice before in the tournament in the 2023 semifinal and 2022 quarterfinal.

At the age of 38, Djokovic has had a pretty strong run in Grand Slams this year, reaching the semifinal of all of them. However, given his age, he isn’t able to keep up with strong competitors like Sinner, who also defeated the 24-time Grand Slam champion last month in the Roland Garros semifinal to reach his maiden clay court major final. Speaking about this turnaround, the 23-year-old at the press conference remarked:

I started to play with Novak when I was very young. You try to gain this experience and learning process. because what you can learn in matches, you cannot produce it in practice sessions… For me every match against him, and not only against him…Obviously with Novak it’s very difficult to find things where he struggles. Of course getting better physically helped a lot. It means you don’t rush to go out of a longer rally. I feel like now that I feel much more comfortable in that…

Sinner, who is known mostly for his prowess on hard court, has reached his second grass-court final and fifth Grand Slam final. However, a stern challenge awaits him as he faces two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz leads the head-to-head rivalry against Jannik Sinner

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz is on a 24-match winning streak across two surfaces. Having won the Queen’s Club Championships before heading to SW19 also gives him a huge boost in confidence. The Spaniard also leads the head-to-head 8-4 against Jannik Sinner.

Sunday’s match will mark the second meeting in a Grand Slam final between Sinner and Alcaraz, who last met at the Roland Garros final this year, where Alcaraz defended his title bravely, coming back from two sets and three championship points down.

Both players have met four times in Grand Slams, with the last three meetings being tough five-set battles. Their upcoming meeting is also expected to be quite intense with high-level shot-making and tenacity.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz will be looking to reach unattainable heights with the title defense, including being the fifth person to accomplish a three-peat at Wimbledon and the second man to complete the Channel Slam multiple times.
