Jasmine Paolini wished fellow compatriot Jannik Sinner a smooth recovery following his retirement from the Cincinnati Open final due to illness. The 24-year-old only played for 23 minutes against Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final before calling on a doctor and physio during a medical timeout.

The World No.1 was down 0-5 in the match, having just won only eight points in five games, and was struggling under the humid temperature in Cincinnati. He retired after a brief discussion with the physio and doctor, bringing an anti-climax end to the highly anticipated clash between him and Alcaraz.

Paolini also fell to Iga Swiatek in the women’s singles final, but showed determination and grit, especially in the first set. The Rome Open champion pushed the former World No.1 hard before she was broken at 5-5. In the second set, Swiatek then took control of the match and went on to win 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 49 minutes.

During the trophy presentation, Paolini was awarded the runners-up title and then went ahead with her speech. She thanked the Cincinnati crowd before revealing that she hopes that Sinner recovers before his title defense at the year’s final Grand Slam event in New York:

Thanks to the crowd for staying; it wasn’t easy after that final. We all wish Jannik the best for the US Open, we hope he recovers. I’m sure you’ll see those two guys again in the finals in the coming years because they’re too good, simply too good!

Paolini enjoyed a glorious run to the final of the Cincinnati Open. Before the tournament, she hadn’t won more than two consecutive matches since the French Open. She opened her campaign by beating former World No.3 Maria Sakkari and then went on to overcome American star Ashlyn Krueger.

In the fourth round, she earned her 2024 Wimbledon final revenge by beating Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets and then knocked out the French Open champion Coco Gauff 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last four. In the semi-finals, she beat Veronika Kudermetova in three sets before eventually losing in the final to Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek says winning the Cincinnati title was one of her hardest after beating Jasmine Paolini in the final

Iga Swiatek began the year poorly and didn’t get to a final until June. The former World No. 1 also dropped from World No. 2 to No. 8 after failing to reach the final of the French Open. But since the start of the grass-court season, she has been the most in-form player on the women’s circuit, reaching three of her last four tournaments’ finals.

After winning the Wimbledon title for the first time in her career, she claimed her maiden Cincinnati Open crown. During her post-match press conference, she revealed that the two aforementioned titles were the hardest to win on her list of silverware at the start of the season. She added that winning both titles has now given her the right motivation to push for more crowns this season:

It’s nice to check off the list another tournament on the season, one I haven’t won. It’s a great motivation to push forward. If I would have to point to two tournaments that would be the hardest ones to win, it would be Wimbledon and Cincinnati, so I’m even more happy. It’s kind of proved that the greatest moments will probably come when you least expect them.

Following Swiatek’s triumph at Cincinnati, her 2025 prize money so far has now reached $8,207,057, and that has taken her total career prize money to $41,349,048, which puts her third behind Serena Williams and Venus Williams on the all-time women’s list. The World No.2’s increase in prize money is mainly due to the $4,069,500 she earned for winning the Wimbledon Championships last month.
