The long-awaited showdown between world number one Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca is finally set to happen, with the match scheduled for later this year.
The two players will meet at the Miami Invitational, an exhibition event held in December. The announcement has already generated plenty of anticipation among fans eager to see how the young Brazilian fares against one of the game’s top players.
Many expected their first meeting to come earlier in the year during day three of the Laver Cup. However, Fonseca wasn’t selected by captain Andre Agassi to play for Team World on what turned out to be their championship-winning day.
Looking ahead to their first clash in Miami, the 19-year-old shared his thoughts on how he thinks the match will play out and offered some insight into what Alcaraz is like away from the spotlight.
Fonseca told Brazilian outlet ‘Estadao’: “Having the opportunity to gain experience from these great players is the main thing for me.
“Even in a short conversation, we can have a great exchange. It will be a day with lots of lessons, really cool, especially with a guy like him, with whom I’ve always had a good relationship.”
“Whenever we cross paths, we greet each other and chat a little; he’s a really great guy. He encourages us a lot to believe and stay motivated to become better players.
“He’s a tennis player who represents very well a way of handling things calmly, always smiling, but at the same time dedicating himself and working hard.”
Looking ahead to what should be an exciting clash in Miami, Fonseca added: “I believe it’s going to be quite lively, with a really cool vibe. Both of us really enjoy playing with the crowd, the entertainment, so I think it’s going to be fun.
“I hope there’s more support for my side and that there are lots of Brazilians present, but I’m sure the vibe on the court will be great either way.”
While he hasn’t yet played Alcaraz on the main tour, Fonseca has already had a few matches against top-ten opponents this season.
He started the year by taking down world number nine Andrey Rublev in straight sets at the Australian Open.

Later on, he faced Jack Draper at Roland Garros but struggled to find his rhythm and lost comfortably to the Brit.
Then, in June, Fonseca pushed world number four Taylor Fritz to a third set at the Eastbourne Open before coming up short again.
