Marin Cilic out of Wimbledon due to COVID-19

2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic will not be participating in this year's Wimbledon Championships, as planned.

As Tom Hamilton explained for ESPN, Cilic was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon because he tested positive for COVID-19.

"Hey guys, I am sad to share that I tested positive for COVID," the 33-year-old said in a post he tweeted. "I have been self-isolating and was hopeful I would be ready but unfortunately, I am still feeling unwell & unable to compete at my best. I am heartbroken to be missing Wimbledon & to see my grass season end this way. [I am] Looking forward to competing next year!"

Cilic was scheduled to face Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round of Wimbledon. Instead, Nuno Borges will serve as a replacement player.

Cilic entered the final full week of June at No. 17 in the official ATP Tour rankings and was named a "potential dark horse" to win the Wimbledon men's singles crown by Chris Oddo of Tennis Now. It's unclear when the 2014 U.S. Open champion and 2017 Wimbledon finalist will be able to return to competitive play.
