Tennis legend Mats Wilander has revealed that Carlos Alcaraz can get closer to matching Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam stakes on tour. The former World No.1 made the statement after the Spaniard claimed his sixth Grand Slam, beating his arch-rival Jannik Sinner in the final of the US Open.
Alcaraz continued his impressive form in New York, dropping just one set en route to the title. The Spaniard produced an aggressive performance against Sinner at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning the first set easily before the half-hour mark. But Sinner responded with a terrific display, breaking him once to win the set.
But after that, Alcaraz dominated the match, dictating the pace of the game, while converting five of 11 break-point opportunities he earned. He won the match 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes on the court. The Spaniard ended Sinner’s 27-match unbeaten streak on hard courts and denied him his third major title of the season.
However, Alcaraz took his Grand Slam tally to six at just 22 years old. Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic didn’t achieve the young Spaniard’s feat at 22. However, Djokovic went on to win 24 Slams, Federer 20, and Nadal 22 before retiring from professional tennis at the Davis Cup in Malaga in November last year.
During a conversation on Eurosport via TNT Sports, Mats Wilander revealed that Alcaraz has a good chance of winning 20 Slams on tour, reaching the records that the Big 3 set. He added that World No.1 is youthful and a great player:
He’s good everywhere. He’s so solid, so nice, the niceness is the best part. He’s a great player but he’s so nice, so humble, so youthful and having fun all the time. He’s a great ambassador for our sport. He’s been with the same team since he was very young, I think he’ll win so much more. The question is, will he win as much as Federer, [Novak] Djokovic and [Rafael] Nadal. Will he win 20 Slams? There is a good chance he will.
Alcaraz and Sinner have been dubbed to dominate the men’s circuit for years as both players have shown far superiority than others. Both players have met in three consecutive Grand Slam finals this season and five consecutive tournament finals in which they both competed. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old has taken a break from the tour after withdrawing from the Davis Cup qualifier.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s clash at the US Open was expected to go five sets before a winner emerges. But surprisingly, Sinner couldn’t contain Alcaraz’s aggressive display at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Italian star managed to win just one set in which Alcaraz didn’t play his best tennis.
During the aforementioned conversation, Mats Wilander said that what is scary about Alcaraz’s display at the US Open final was that he’s just 22. The tennis legend noted that the Spaniard was just too good for Sinner to contain:
Alcaraz was just a little bit too good. Today, he was as sharp as he’s been all tournament and he was too good. He’s still so young, that’s what scary. He’s got six majors, back to world No 1, which is huge for him. The youngest man to win six Grand Slams, he broke another record of mine.
Alcaraz now holds an overwhelming 10-5 lead against Sinner in their head-to-head record on tour. He has also beaten the Italian in seven of their last eight encounters on tour. Alcaraz also leads the 24-year-old in their head-to-head record in Grand Slam title wins 6-4, but both have won four each in the past two seasons.
