Jannik Sinner is into the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career. On Sunday (July 13), he will be up against his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz, who he will be locking horns with, for the third time this season and the second time in a Grand Slam final.
Their colleague, Nick Kyrgios, did not play in the tournament because of fitness issues. The tennis world is well aware of the doping case of Sinner and Kyrgios’ harsh comments.
Sinner tested positive for clostebol twice and did not receive a harsh punishment from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). Due to the negligence of his team members, he was later handed a three-month suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). During one of ‘Wimbledon Unfiltered with Nick Kyrgios‘ episodes on talkSPORT, Kyrgios said he had a good relationship with Sinner before the doping scandal.
We never texted each other. The funny thing is, we had a good relationship before his suspension. We got along well. We played against each other and everything was fine. It was a crazy match, in Miami in 2022. I got three warnings and I almost got disqualified. It was hilarious because I was going crazy during that match, the crowd was like a football match and Sinner was sitting there, all calm.
The Italian was banned after the Australian Open, which he defended by beating Alexander Zverev. And this added fuel to the controversy, with many people accusing the anti-doping agencies of handling Sinner’s case in a convenient manner, given that the Italian ace did not miss a Grand Slam tournament while being on the sidelines.
I knew this guy was going to be good because he was very mentally tough, nothing bothered him. He was very calm. He didn’t fall for any of my tricks. We actually had a good relationship. Now we’ll probably never speak to each other again.
Nick Kyrgios added
That 2022 Miami Open fourth round was the only match they have played against each other. Sinner won that match with a 7-6(3), 6-3 scoreline.
Jannik Sinner was expected to struggle after making his comeback from the doping ban at the Italian Open. But to everyone’s surprise, he made it to the final but ended up losing the match to Carlos Alcaraz.
Next was the French Open, where Sinner made the final for the first time in his career. He was leading two sets to love and had three match points in the fourth set. But Alcaraz denied him the victory by making one of the best comebacks in tennis history. Their match has now become the longest French Open final in the history of tennis.
And now, he has reached back-to-back Grand Slam finals. Nick Kyrgios, on ‘Wimbledon Unfiltered with Nick Kyrgios’ episodes on talkSPORT, too expressed his admiration for Sinner for the way he performed right after his return.
For someone like myself and others who have been out of the game for a little bit of time, not being in that competitive environment, you lose a step, the thing with Jannik Sinner is that he hasn’t and he has even gotten better, which is scary to me.
Before scheduling the Wimbledon final clash with Alcaraz, Sinner knocked out 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the last four. Sinner trails 4-8 in the head-to-head matchups with the five-time Grand Slam champion, the winner of four grass-court titles.
Sinner is chasing his second grass-court title at Wimbledon, following last year’s Halle Open. Alcaraz entered Wimbledon after lifting the Queen’s Club Championships. If he wins, he will become the fifth man in the Open Era to win three consecutive titles at SW19 as well as the second man after Bjorn Borg to complete the Channel Slam for consecutive seasons.
