Australia’s Nick Kyrgios is set to return to the court in the upcoming Mubadala Citi DC Open. The 30-year-old has struggled with fitness concerns for a long period of time. He suffered a serious wrist injury back in 2022 and has never been able to recover completely.
Kyrgios returned to the court at the end of 2024 but has not been able to play consistently at the highest level. He played in just one out of the three Grand Slams this year, which was the Australian Open. However, his journey was cut short as he suffered a defeat in the first round. After losing the contest, Kyrgios hinted at a possible retirement, at least from the singles category, and admitted that he did not enjoy playing in pain.
"Realistically, I can't really see myself playing singles match here again," he said back then after losing to Britain's Jacob Fearnley in a contest that lasted just over two hours. "I was knocking on the door from playing some of the biggest events ... winning some of the biggest events. When you're competing for the biggest tournaments in the world and you're struggling to win sets, physically, it's pretty tough. It's just not enjoyable for me."
Recently, the Canberra-born player was forced to withdraw from the French Open and Wimbledon after suffering a knee injury. Things are now starting to look much better for the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up and his fans as he is set to return to the court in the upcoming ATP event. Kyrgios will feature in the doubles category and will partner veteran French player Gael Monfils in the competition, which will be played from July 21 to 27 in Washington, D.C. The development was confirmed in a post on the tournament's official page on the social media platform X.
