'Now the choice is mine': Jannik Sinner claims power over coach Darren Cahill future after Wimbledon triumph

Italy’s Jannik Sinner has revealed an interesting scenario which could force his current coach, Darren Cahill, to stay with him after 2025 as well. The 23-year-old lifted his fourth Grand Slam title on Sunday after beating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

The victory was a special one for Sinner on so many levels. He was praised for showing resilience after suffering a heartbreaking defeat just over a month ago in the final of the French Open against the same opponent despite having three championship points. Not only that, but Sinner also sacked his physio coach just days before the start of the competition. Despite all of that, Sinner became the first Italian player ever to lift a Wimbledon singles title.

While talking to the media after the match, Sinner was asked about his coach, Cahill, who has already announced that he will retire at the end of 2025. In response, Sinner stated that he now holds the key regarding that decision, having won the bet they had before the final. The condition was that if he won the competition, he would get to decide whether Cahill would be allowed to retire at the end of the season.

"We made a bet before the final… I told him that if I won, I could choose whether he would stay at the end of the year or not. Now the choice is mine!,” he said. “I've always looked for an honest person who gives me so much, not just on the tennis court, but also in life outside, both in success and disappointment. He's great at that. If I choose to stay with him, he probably won't travel so much anymore, that's normal. I've always told him I'd like to have him in Australia, because things are going well. Plus, the season is still long, there are still a lot of tournaments to go, and I'll still see him a lot... But I won the bet, now we'll see.”
