Patrick Mouratoglou has weighed in on the serving abilities of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
The pair have split the last eight Grand Slam titles, leading to constant comparisons between their games. They’ve also met in the past three major finals, with Alcaraz winning the most recent one at the US Open.
Mouratoglou, who has worked with big servers like Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, shared his thoughts on who holds the edge between Sinner and Alcaraz.
Sinner was criticised for a key serving mistake in that US Open final against Alcaraz, which some believe played a role in his defeat.
While Mouratoglou didn’t reference that specific match, he did share his view that Alcaraz holds the edge when it comes to serving ability.
Speaking on Instagram, the Frenchman praised the reliability of Alcaraz’s serve and broke down the technical differences between the two players.
“Both of their serves are good,” said Mouratoglou. “I would say that Carlos’ serve is a bit better, even though Jannik’s serve is good. Carlos is way shorter than Jannik and is more consistent with the serve.
“I would say that one reason for that, is that if you look at him while they’re both hitting the ball, the upper body of Jannik is going a little bit down, while Carlos’ stays completely straight and just the arm and only the arm passes, which gives him more stability during the shot and as a consequence, more consistency.”
Mouratoglou may see Alcaraz as the stronger server, but the numbers from ATPTour.com actually favour Sinner across most categories.
Sinner leads in five out of six major serving metrics, with Alcaraz holding an advantage only in first serve percentage.
