With the likes of Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys all waving the flag for American tennis, there has been no shortage of stars on the WTA circuit in recent times. However, two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova believes American teenage sensation Iva Jovic could have her moment in the spotlight sooner rather than later.
The 17-year old earned her main draw berth at the 2025 Cincinnati Open after going through qualifiers. Jovic would power through the opening two rounds, defeating Argentine Solana Sierra and 20th seed Linda Noskova to reach the third round at the WTA 1000 event.
However, Jovic's Cincinnati campaign would come to an end at the hands of Czech star Barbora Krejcikova. The two-time Grand Slam champion would stifle a second set comeback to prevail in a 6-4 3-6 6-2 victory.
Despite her loss to the veteran, Jovic displayed flashes of brilliance and poise that belied her experience on tour. The California native left many impressed during her stay in Cincinnati, including opponent Krejcikova herself.
The former World No.2 is a formidable opponent when on top of her game, which she has proven on multiple occasions. Already very successful at doubles, Krejcikova made her breakthrough on the singles circuit by winning the French Open in 2021. She would repeat as a Grand Slam champion when she captured the trophy at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
Nonetheless, Jovic appears to have left a good impression on Krejcikova. The Czech praised the World No.88 with a "Good match. Keep going," greeting at the net following their match, and pointed out the American teenager's potential in her post-match conference.
“I wish I played like her when I was 17," said Krejcikova. "I feel like she’s [going to have] a great future ahead of her. I’m really happy I found my way through."
Krejcikova will face Italian Jasmine Paolini on Thursday for a spot in the quarterfinals.
