The end of October will also mark the conclusion of the 2025 tennis season for most players, except those who qualify for the ATP or WTA Finals. Practically, tennis doesn’t stop as there is still Challenger tournaments scheduled in November and a few exhibitions, and the Next Gen ATP Finals during the short off-season in December. That said, six more prominent names have decided to shut down their season earlier, joining Jack Draper, Elina Svitolina, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Hubert Hurkacz.
Collins won’t play again in 2025. The American played her last tournament at the US Open. Collins was expected to retire from professional tennis at the end of last season, but she changed her mind. 2025 has since been a disappointing campaign. The former Miami champion faced numerous physical setbacks and appeared in only 19 matches.
Daria Kasatkina made the bold decision not to defend her title in Ningbo after shutting down her season at the end of September. In a statement on Instagram, Kasatkina revealed that she had reached a “breaking point” and the mental stress of traveling and competing was overwhelming. The Australian will return in 2026.
Tiafoe signed up to play in at least four events during the European indoor swing. However, a crushing defeat to Yannick Hanfmann in the second round of the Shanghai Masters forced a complete change of plan. Tiafoe withdrew from all those tournaments and opted to end his season early. He is expected to finish 2025 outside the Top 30 of the ATP rankings.
Former WTA No. 1 Karolina Pliskova returned to competition a month ago after a long-term injury setback, but only featured in two 125K tournaments. Although the big-serving Czech was excited and relieved to rejoin the tour, she opened up on the need to give her body sufficient time to adapt and won’t play another match this season.
After recording a three-match losing streak, Teichmann took to Instagram earlier this month to share her decision to end the season early. The Swiss lefty fell just short of returning to the world’s Top 100. But she is prioritizing her mental and physical health and hopes to return in 2026.
Masarova is one of four players who switched their nationality this season. The big-hitting Swiss underwent elbow surgery after persistent pain left her unable to train and compete. Masarova will use the remaining months of the year to recover and has not set a return date.
Japanese player Aoi Ito won four tour level matches in 2025 and had a breakthrough season into the top 100. However, a lower back stress fracture has ended her season. Ito has a very unique slice filled game and is a cult fan favorite on tour.
