The 2025 Miami Open is the second leg of the famed Sunshine Swing. A full-strength lineup is expected to assemble at the Hard Rock Stadium in a couple of weeks to play in the fourth WTA 1000 of the season. The tournament organizers have released the list of wild cards for the women’s draw and it features two former champions.
The first wild card has gone to Petra Kvitova. The Czech won her last hard-court tournament at the 2023 Miami Open before she went on maternity leave later that season. She returned to action as a wild card entrant at the ATX Open in Austin last month. Kvitova was also given a wild card in the Indian Wells main draw.
The second name is that of 2018 champion Sloane Stephens. After a barren run in the first two months of the new season (0-4), Stephens is in desperate need of a win from somewhere. And there is no better place for the 31-year-old to get her season off and running than in her home state of Florida.
The third wild card is Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. This will be her 11th main draw appearance at the Miami Open. Her debut appearance goes all the way back to 2010. Only once in her career she made it to the second week of this tournament.
The fourth wild card is American teenager Tyra Caterina Grant. The 16-year-old is a three-time Grand Slam doubles champion at junior level. She has two ITF titles to her name but has never competed on the WTA Tour. Grant is currently ranked outside the Top 400.
The second teenager on this list is Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. The 19-year-old is ranked in the world’s Top 150 and will make her third main draw appearance in Miami. She lost in the first round in her two previous visits.
The sixth wild card is one of the in-form players on the ITF circuit. Canada’s Victoria Mboko has a near-perfect 23-1 record from six ITF tournaments in 2025. Mboko has lifted four titles in two months and has fast-tracked her surge in the WTA rankings (up to 188th at the time of writing). This will be her second WTA main draw (she lost in the first round in Granby in 2022).
The last wild card has gone to Japan’s Sayaka Ishii. The World No. 206 impressed in her last WTA main draw appearance on home soil in Tokyo. Ishii reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier.
