Tennis star Amanda Anisimova went from the highs of playing in a Grand Slam final to the lows of suffering one of the most lop-sided defeats in Wimbledon history in only a few hours. However, the American would receive tremendous support from the British crowd, with Catherine, Princess of Wales, showering her with some consoling words after the match.

Coming off an incredible two-week run at SW19, Anisimova faced former World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the final. With the Polish star herself a surprise finalist, both ladies were set to compete for their maiden Wimbledon title.

Swiatek storms to victory, Princess Kate consoles Anisimova

The five-time Grand Slam championed quickly added a sixth to her resume, as she breezed past a visibly nervous Anisimova with a 6-0 6-0 victory. The match lasted 57 minutes, with Anisimova bursting into tears during the trophy presentation.

Princess Kate, who is a patron of the All England Club, was present to hand the trophies to both the winner and runner-up. After giving Swiatek the Venus Rosewater dish, Kate handed Anisimova the runner-up trophy, and was seen consoling the American during the exchange.

When asked what the Princess said to her, Anisimova revealed Kate offered her some words of encouragement.

"I wasn't sure if she was going to come out today, if she was going to be there, so it's just really nice to see her," admitted Anisimova. "She definitely had a few things to say that were making me emotional again. She was really kind and she told me to keep my head high."

Following her exceptional run to the Wimbledon final, Anisimova broke into the top 10 of the WTA Rankings. The 23-year old rose to a career-high of World No.7, and is enjoying a resurgent season that saw her win the Qatar Open WTA 1000 event earlier this year.
