Taylor Fritz, the fourth ranked player in the world, has endured a disappointing 2025 season so far. The American has a win-loss record of 17-10 and if you remove the five matches at the United Cup early on in the year, it stands at 13-9. That is a telling statistic for a player who is expected to reach at least the semi-finals if not better judging by his ranking.
Since the Australian Open, Fritz has managed to reach a solitary semifinal stage–at the Miami Masters. While it is well known that clay is not his preferred surface, the results so far have been nothing short of shocking.
Fritz entered the Australian Open 2025 in decent touch having gotten good match practice in the United Cup and he carried that in his first two matches by waltzing through them. Perhaps not many would have expected him to lose to Gael Monfils in the third round but that’s what happened and it was a major upset.
The French Open 2025 carried a different feel for Fritz having just won three matches in the three tournaments he played on clay. Yet the first round exit does signal something is not right with Fritz’s game this year.
Fritz is humble enough to accept his shortcomings and that is the first step towards solving any problem. In his post match assessment after the loss in the first round, he mentions, “I feel like since between Rome, Geneva and here, my movement on court is really bad. I don’t know what’s going on. A lot of times when I’m sliding, I’m off balance, I’m not timing it correctly. I’m getting wrong-footed a lot, slipping a lot.”
The above statement highlights how under confident Fritz is feeling right now and with chinks in his movement, the American needs to go back to the drawing board.
Fritz will no doubt be looking forward to the second half of the 2025 season with Wimbledon and the US Open on the cards. The American has generally performed well in the second half with a finals appearance last year at the US Open.
It may look like he has the time to sort things out but things move fast in the tennis world and especially so if you are defending a lot of points with your top five ranking at stake.
