Danielle Collins reversed her retirement decision last week. She shared on Instagram why she decided to play in 2025 after announcing after her second-round defeat at the Australian Open that 2024 would be her final season. Her compatriot Andy Roddick shared his opinion about her decision.

The reason why Collins wanted to bid farewell to tennis at the age of 30 was because she wanted to start a family. Collins however is still dealing with fertility and endometriosis issues owing to which she deemed it best for herself to keep playing in 2025. Roddick was happy as a tennis fan with Collins’ decision to delay her retirement.

Purely from a tennis fan perspective, I am happy we are going to get to see more of her. It has arguably been the best year of her career, certainly for six weeks, maybe two months. It was hard to argue against her being the best player on tour for that stretch, from Miami through to Charleston, even into Rome where she made the semis.

Collins will be part of the USA’s mixed doubles team for the United Cup the next year. As she delayed her retirement, her focus will be to build her form in 2025 and make deep runs in the Grand Slam events.

Andy Roddick hopes Danielle Collins fulfills her off-court dreams

After announcing her retirement, Danielle Collins performed impressively on the WTA Tour, for she won her first WTA 1000 title at the Miami Open. A week later, she clinched the Charleston Open. The four-time title winner was excited to wrap up her career on a high note for the next chapter of her life, but as things have not gone as planned, Andy Roddick wished her to fulfill all her off-court dreams.

Is it the right time to start a family or not? I can’t comment on any of that. I hope everything else that is way more important than tennis works out the way she wants it to.

Collins last played in the Guadalajara Open in Zapopan, Mexico. She locked horns with Olivia Gadecki in the first round and lost it. Before that, she participated in the US Open and was defeated in three sets by compatriot Caroline Dolehide.

Her best performance in Grand Slam events was in the 2022 Australian Open. She booked herself a place in the final but lost to Ash Barty.
