Rafael Nadal had the better of Andy Murray on and off the tennis court…
The Spaniard and Brit met 24 times on the professional ATP Tour.
Nadal won their head-to-head 17-7, dominating the three-time Grand Slam champion.
For all his success on the court, Nadal still managed to cause Murray problems off it.
Appearing as a guest on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show‘ in 2013, Murray shared the story of how Nadal pranked him a few years earlier.
Murray recalled the time Nadal pranked him when he was out for dinner with his girlfriend in New York.
“He did prank me once in New York, a couple of years ago. Do you want to hear the story?” he told Jonathan Ross.
“Basically, I was sitting at dinner with my girlfriend, during the meal, which I probably shouldn’t have done anyway because it’s rude, I was checking my phone.
“I looked at one of the messages, and it was from a number I didn’t recognise, and it said ‘Oh my god, Andy, you look so sexy tonight, it’s a shame you’re here with your girlfriend’.
“I obviously didn’t tell my girlfriend at first, didn’t want to ruin the meal, so I put it back in my pocket.
“On the way back from the meal, it clicked who it was.
“But he’d obviously been watching me the whole time from a distance, seeing my face.”
Murray vowed to get Nadal back, but how many times did he beat him on the court after 2013?
During his 2013 interview with Ross, Murray was asked about his chances of winning the French Open.
“I’m not very good on clay, unfortunately,” he said.
He was also keen to recognise Nadal’s talents, who had just won the eighth of his 14 Roland Garros titles.
“I think he’s won eight French Opens now,” said Murray.
Murray was unable to topple Nadal at the French Open and finished his career without a title at the event.
He did, however, beat the Spaniard on clay twice before he retired.
Reaching the final of the Madrid Open in 2015, few predicted Murray to upset Nadal, the two-time defending champion.
Shocking Nadal and the home fans, Murray won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to claim the Madrid Open crown.
He remarkably repeated the feat a year later, taking down Nadal for a second time at his home tournament, as Murray returned to the final.
Unfortunately for Murray, he was unable to defend his title, losing to Novak Djokovic in three sets.
Murray and Nadal never played another match after 2016, as their rivalry came to an end.
They will forever be remembered as two of the greatest players of their generation…
