Two matches in one day: Taylor Fritz finally thwarts Joao Fonseca, returns for Marcos Giron Quarter-Final at Eastbourne

Taylor Fritz will play two matches in a day in his bid to win four Eastbourne titles in what will be a tough day for the American after surviving a late comeback attempt from Joao Fonseca.

Fritz was facing Fonseca on Wednesday in what was the top tie of the day but it was a tie that was quickly halted due to darkness after they split sets. The American would've been expecting to ease through from there after gaining an early break and he attempted to serve out the match at 5-3 in the final set.

But Fonseca fought back with the windy conditions seeing Fritz game fall off slightly but he managed to prevail over a determined Fonseca after two hours and two minutes 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5. He will have to return though later today to face Marcos Giron in the Quarter-Finals.

“I’m really happy. I was really happy with the level of tennis last night, it’s a shame we couldn’t finish the match then,” said Fritz. “Coming out today, it was tough to really judge my grass-court play, there was a lot of scrapping around.”

Will he still be as happy later when he plays Giron? Albeit the grass has been a real happy hunting ground for him in the past and he said that is semi testament to the short nature of the season.

“I think almost half of my career titles are on grass, which says a lot for how short the grass-court season is,” he added. “I feel really confident on it, I feel like I can be serving well, taking care of service games when it’s not really windy.”

Fritz leads his Head-to-Head 4-2 against Giron. Fonseca on the other hand likely with the fanfare that often follows the 18-year-old will now head to Wimbledon, his first ever tilt at the grass court major.
