Iga Swiatek is directly into the Wimbledon quarterfinals after overcoming 23rd seed Clara Tauson in straight sets. The five-time Grand Slam champion delivered a phenomenal performance to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time in her career, setting up a clash with Liudmila Samsonova.
The start of the match seemed adverse for Swiatek, who lost her first service game to love, though she quickly recovered with a break back. Things got complicated again when Tauson secured her second consecutive break after Swiatek managed to win just one point out of nine played on her serve, with only a handful of those on first serve.
Tauson went up 3-1 without issues, but then came Swiatek's comeback. The World No. 4 managed to hold her service game for the first time in the 5th game, which was a huge confidence boost. She won 12 of the next 13 points and took a 4-3 lead. Tauson stayed in the fight, but the pressure on her serve was too much, and Swiatek secured a late break that gave her the set 6-4, winning 5 of the last 6 games played.
Once Swiatek gains confidence, it's difficult to break her rhythm, and Tauson experienced this in the second set. The Dane managed to hold her first service game, but from there, she could do little against her opponent's momentum. From 1-1, Swiatek won 20 of the next 24 points – with two consecutive breaks – and ultimately closed out the win 6-4, 6-1, with her second-set performance being particularly outstanding.
The Pole won an incredible 92% of points on her first serve throughout the match – compared to only 58% for Tauson. She also hit 18 winners against her opponent's 7, while being slightly better with unforced errors, with 16 against her opponent's 18 – although half of Swiatek's errors came in the first few games, leaving them behind as the minutes passed.
The 24-year-old Pole will return to the court this Wednesday in the quarterfinals against Russia's Liudmila Samsonova. With most of the top-10 players eliminated, Swiatek has seized her opportunity and appears to be in impeccable form. Only four top-15 players remain in the competition, and Swiatek seems to be the second-best positioned in the title fight – only behind Aryna Sabalenka. Can Swiatek reach the Wimbledon semifinals again?
