Aryna Sabalenka is set to take on Jessica Pegula in the semi-final of the US Open, a rematch of the championship final last year. The World No.1 will look to become the first player since Serena Williams (2012-2014) to defend the US Open women’s singles. But this season, she’s yet to win a Grand Slam title.
Pegula is in her second Grand Slam semi-final of her career. She had failed to get past the quarter-finals of a major tournament on six occasions before breaking the curse last year by reaching the final of the US Open. The 30-year-old is the highest-ranked American woman left in the draw and will aim to win the title.
Aryna Sabalenka last lifted a title on tour at the Madrid Open in April. Since then, she has been to only one final and that was at the 2025 French Open. However, she has been to four semi-finals, including the 2025 US Open, and has managed to get over the line once. In the build-up to the US Open, she failed to defend the Cincinnati Open title losing to Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals.
She opened her account as defending champion at the New York Grand Slam with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Rebeka Masarova. The top seed then breezed past Polina Kudermetova and Leylah Fernandez before overcoming Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth round. She advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open after Marketa Vondrousova withdrew from their quarter-finals clash due to a knee injury.
Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, had her last appearance in a tournament final in June at Bad Homburg. But she arrived in New York for the US Open in poor form, winning just two matches in her last four tournaments, including none at the Wimbledon Championships. Nonetheless, she began her campaign at Flushing Meadows with a straight-sets win over Mayar Sherif.
The World No.4 then overcame Anna Blinkova 6-1, 6-3 in the second round before beating former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 7-5 in the third round. She continued with her routine wins against Ann Li, but the quarter-finals presented a different challenge as she faced former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, winning clinically, 6-3, 6-3.
Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula have met each other nine times on the court, with the former leading the latter 7-2 in their head-to-head record, winning all three of their last meetings on hard courts. The Belarusian is the favorite to win the clash but she’s yet to win a major title this season, thanks to three American players.
The first was Madison Keys at the Australian Open final, after that Coco Gauff came from a set down to beat the World No.1 at the Roland Garros final. Amanda Anisimova then stunned Sabalenka in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships. Pegula will be hoping to become the fourth American to beat Sabalenka this year.
Despite not having a favorable head-to-head record against Sabalenka, Pegula has shown that she can beat the best players on tour in recent years. The American has also not dropped a set at the tournament and will go all out for revenge against the World No.1 when they meet at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Match prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in three sets.
