Novak Djokovic has now reached every Grand Slam semifinal this season. On Tuesday (September 2), he knocked out the last American man in the draw, Taylor Fritz, after tough four sets.

This means the Serb has now set up a mouthwatering semifinal clash with Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard, before scheduling the match against the 24-time Grand Slam champion, eliminated Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka in straight sets.

Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Preview

Novak Djokovic is barely playing in tournaments other than the Grand Slam ones. He even skipped the two Masters 1000s – the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters- before the US Open.

The US Open is the first tournament since his defeat to eventual winner Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of Wimbledon. Sinner was also the reason behind his elimination in the semifinals of the French Open.

At the Australian Open, Nole failed to complete the match against World No.3 Alexander Zverev because of an injury. Apart from his Grand Slam semifinal runs, he also advanced to the finals of the Miami Open and the Geneva Open, losing the former to Jakub Mensik and winning the latter by defeating Hubert Hurkacz.

The Geneva Open was the 100th title of his career, making him only the third man after Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors to reach the title tally. The last Grand Slam title he lifted was here back in 2023 by defeating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, and since that win, he made it to just one Grand Slam final- the 2024 Wimbledon, which he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has reached the most finals and won the most titles on the men’s tour this season. After clinching the Rotterdam Open and playing three events without reaching the finals, the 22-year-old booked a spot in every final of the tournaments he played on the European clay swing, including at the French Open, where he defeated Sinner in five sets to defend his crown.

Apart from the French Open title, he won the Monte Carlo Masters and the Italian Open on clay. After the clay swing, Alcaraz continued his winning ways by grabbing his fourth grass-court trophy at the Queen’s Club Championships by defeating Jiri Lehecka.

Alcaraz then progressed to his third consecutive Wimbledon final but failed to complete the three-peat after a four-set defeat to Sinner. Next, in the Cincinnati Masters, he was handed a walkover by the Italian ace as the latter was sick.

Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Prediction

Alcaraz is chasing his second US Open title. At the 2022 US Open, he defeated Casper Ruud and won his first Grand Slam title. Djokovic is the winner of four US Open titles, the last of which he claimed in 2023.

Though it’s difficult to predict the winner because Djokovic is Alcaraz’s opponent, the latter has an edge if their recent form is considered. They will be facing each other for the fifth time in Grand Slam events and the first time at the US Open. Djokovic and Alcaraz are 2-2 in Majors, while the former has a 5-3 head-to-head edge, which also includes wins in their last two meetings.

Match prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in five sets.
