Day 6 at the US Open is set to bring high-quality matchups. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match around the grounds. Jordan Reynolds, Nurein Ahmed, and Tope Oke are on hand to share their thoughts on four of the day’s best matches.

Mirra Andreeva vs Taylor Townsend

Jordan: Andreeva needs to deal with Townsend’s powerful serve and variety, a combination that proved too much for Jelena Ostapenko. The teenager is much more steady and consistent than the Latvian, which is crucial in this matchup.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2

Nurein: Andreeva is hardly 20 and she is already an elite athlete. It would take a seismic shock and a bit of luck for Townsend to pick her off. The American’s best strategy would be to shorten points so that Andreeva doesn’t find her range, but that is easier said than done.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2

Tope: Mirra Andreeva has made it to the round of 16 at the other three Grand Slams and can complete the set with a win against Taylor Townsend. The Russian has only lost five games in her first two matches, and while Townsend pulled off an impressive victory over the 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko, it’s difficult to envision her being a challenge for the Russian teenager.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2

Jessica Pegula vs Victoria Azarenka

Jordan: Both players have similar styles. Pegula implements her game to a higher level than Azarenka, who is past her prime. The American should get the job done.
Prediction: Pegula in 2

Nurein: Pegula and Azarenka are two veterans in the sport but at this stage of their careers, it is Azarenka who is past her peak. That doesn’t mean she can’t produce good results, but it is the consistency which is lacking. Pegula wasn’t at the races before this tournament, but she is moving a touch better this week and defending with efficiency. That could give her a sizable advantage.
Prediction: Pegula in 2

Tope: Last year’s runner-up, Jessica Pegula, has shown strong form in the early rounds as she seeks to improve on her performance this year. Standing in her way this time is 36-year-old Azarenka, a three-time finalist at Flushing Meadows who is participating in her first tournament since Wimbledon and may lack the necessary preparation ahead of her clash with the fourth seed.

This matchup will be their seventh encounter, with the head-to-head standing evenly at three wins each. It promises to be another tight contest, but Pegula’s superior match fitness, combined with the New York crowd, will likely carry her through.
Prediction: Pegula in 2

Elena Rybakina vs Emma Raducanu

Jordan: Raducanu’s superb level in her opening two matches offers encouragement for this significant test. The Briton’s baseline play was better than Rybakina’s in the opening two rounds. I feel Raducanu will make a statement here.
Prediction: Raducanu in 3

Nurein: Raducanu has been winning convincingly against lower-ranked opponents but it is matches against the WTA’s top stars that the Briton has often fallen short this season. And it is looking likely that will be the case again. Rybakina’s effortless power shrinks the court and Raducanu’s attack will be dented.
Prediction: Rybakina in 2

Tope: Ninth seed Elena Rybakina will test Emma Raducanu’s impressive performance in one of the most notable matchups of the 2025 US Open to date. The British player has been turning heads with her rapid wins and appears to be thriving under the guidance of her new coach, Francisco Roig.
However, Rybakina possesses the effortless power to push Raducanu well beyond the baseline and outside of her usual playing style, meaning the world number 36 will need resilience and defensive skills to prevail.

Rybakina won their only meeting in Sydney three years ago; however, the former US Open champion is certainly performing at a higher level as we move through 2025, and while her journey may conclude here, there is also the likelihood she causes an upset.
Prediction: Raducanu in 3

Elise Mertens vs Cristina Bucsa

Jordan: This is a good matchup for Mertens. Bucsa’s flat shots without much pace suit the Belgian perfectly. Expect her to have few issues.
Prediction: Mertens in 2

Nurein: Playing Mertens in the first week of a Grand Slam is usually a tough assignment. Bucsa is a player who makes you work for victory, but the Belgian rarely falters in matches of this stature and it would be a shock if she did.
Prediction: Mertens in 3

Tope: Despite being the 19th seed and holding a ranking 74 spots lower than her rival, the Spaniard has performed exceptionally well in this year’s tournament and previously defeated the Belgian in Beijing last year.

Mertens, like Bucsa, has a perfect record in New York thus far, making this poised for a very competitive encounter. Bucsa can nick a set, but I see Mertens’ experience guiding her over the line.
Prediction: Mertens in 3
