With several star names set to be in action, there should be plenty of entertaining tennis on day nine at the US Open and, as ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match – including the action in the men’s singles. But who will secure a place in the quarterfinals in New York?

US Open Day 9 Predictions

Amanda Anismova vs Beatriz Haddad Maia

Tope: Beatriz Haddad Maia has set aside some challenging results in 2025 to rediscover her top form at the US Open. She is now aiming for consecutive quarter-finals at the US Open, but she first has to win a heavyweight clash with Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova.

The American required three sets to get past the tricky Jaqueline Cristian and remains the favourite to win this match, and should come out on top if she stays focused and sticks to her strategy. At the same time, the South American must elevate her performance to have a genuine chance of causing an upset.

Prediction: Anisimova in 3

Jordan: Haddad Maia will try to soak up pressure and frustrate Anisimova in this matchup. I doubt the Brazilian can handle the American’s powerful hitting. Only Aryna Sabalenka strikes the ball with the same pace, and Haddad Maia’s second serve is especially vulnerable in this matchup.

Prediction: Anisimova in 2

Nurein: If we expected a reaction from Anisimova after her devastating Wimbledon final defeat, then we got one at the US Open. The American has advanced to the second week of her home Major for the first time. Haddad Maia was a quarterfinalist at the US Open last year, but her dream draw will end here as she takes on her first seeded opponent.

Naomi Osaka vs Coco Gauff

Tope: Third seed Coco Gauff has encountered challenges with her revamped serve and will need to deliver another steady performance to overcome four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. The Japanese player won a thrilling encounter against Daria Kasatkina, keeping her in excellent form and setting up a sixth career meeting with Gauff—all on hard courts.

Much has evolved since their last meeting, but it’s clear that Osaka possesses the skills to challenge Gauff, especially if she feels pressure regarding her shaky serve, and if that continues, Osaka is a counterpuncher who’ll grab every opportunity.

Prediction: Osaka in 3

Jordan: Gauff played well for the first time at the tournament against Magdalena Frech. Osaka needs to serve well so she can put herself in a position to take advantage of the American’s troubles with her own serve. It could be tight, but I think Gauff’s superb defensive skills against Osaka’s power make her a slight favorite.

Prediction: Gauff in 3

Nurein: This could be the match of the week if not the tournament and it has all the makings of being a classic. However, that largely depends on Gauff’s serving as the American has looked extremely shaky on her delivery at the US Open. She’s been racking up double faults under pressure and she has admitted that she’s always nervous at home tournaments. Osaka’s calmness could be decisive factor in settling this match and it might be the statement win she needs to underline her title chances.

Marta Kostyuk vs Karolina Muchova

Tope: Marta Kostyuk’s deepest run in New York will see her face Karolina Muchova for the first time. She has shown impressive form since Montreal, after weathering a six-match losing streak, but she will have it all to do against a fully fit and sharp Muchova. The Czech star has been pushed to the limit in every match thus far, and it’s likely she will face a similar challenge here, but she is expected to overcome yet again.

Prediction: Muchova in 3

Jordan: Kostyuk will try to make her superiority in backhand-to-backhand rallies count in this matchup. Muchova’s greater variety and ability to take the intense Ukrainian out of her comfort zone is her best path to victory. I’ll back Muchova, but this feels like a 50/50 toss-up.

Prediction: Muchova in 3

Nurein: Kostyuk struggled for form and fitness before the US Open, but she’s having a proper run in this tournament. But Muchova will likely be an obstacle here if she can force the Ukrainian out of her comfort zone with a mix of spins and slices. This one leans towards three sets with Muchova having the edge.

Iga Swiatek vs Ekaterina Alexandrova

Tope: Iga Swiatek’s pursuit of her seventh Grand Slam title will face its most significant challenge yet against the in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova. The current Wimbledon champion had to grind out a win against Anna Kalinskaya and hasn’t looked totally convincing in New York.

Although Swiatek holds a 4-2 lead in their head-to-head record, Alexandrova will approach this match without fear, especially as they are even on hard courts, and with the impressive form the 13th seed is showing, she likely feels confident in exploiting Swiatek’s weaknesses. The Russians certainly have the potential to take the match to a decider, and anything can happen from there.

Prediction: Alexandrova in 3

Jordan: Alexandrova strikes the ball cleanly and will try to rush Swiatek. Her most significant issue in this matchup is being among the weakest movers on the WTA Tour. The in-form Swiatek is more than ready to make that advantage pay and triumph in straight sets.

Prediction: Swiatek in 2

Nurein: Swiatek survived a scare in her match against Anna Kalinskaya and such turnarounds can often fuel a deep run. But the second seed must play even better against Alexandrova whose is one the tour’s heavy hitters. Swiatek needs a good start because the last time she played Alexandrova on a hard court, she was outplayed in two sets.

Prediction: Swiatek in 3
